zoom - galleria Juventus-owned youngster Giovinco has long been touted as a future Italian international. The 5ft 3in playmaker has represented Italy at every age-group since Under-16 level and is now making a huge splash for the Italy Under-21s.
Giovinco, who is currently on loan at Empoli, was again in excellent form for the Azzurrini on Tuesday afternoon as a sublime piece of individual brilliance helped setup Robert Acquafresca’s goal in the 1-0 win against Albania.
1982 World Cup Winner Zoff is certainly excited by Giovinco’s potential: “Giovinco is the miniature Del Piero. Indeed I believe he has superior fantasy and technical ability to Il Pinturicchio.â€
Giovinco’s strongest position is in the hole behind the strikers, a position known in Italy as the ‘trequartista’. But does Zoff think Giovinco’s lack of height will hamper his chances of forging a successful career?
“Will Giovinco’s height be a problem? If a player has the ability and class, his size does not matter. Diego Maradona taught us all that,†Zoff explained.
Giovinco has recently been linked with a £10m move to Russian club CSKA Moscow, however it is believed that
Juventus regard him as an untouchable asset and unavailable for sale at any price.
