Italy lack options; apparently versatility is more important than overall quality these days. The U-21 have some exciting and interesting talents. Hopefully, they get a chance, even as early as the next WC. If they are good enough, they are old enough.

This Italy squad is sorely lacking in terms of depth and quality (compared to teams of the past); that guys like Giac, Gio, and Diamanti get called up is testament to that.
If the U/21 tournament wasn't on, you can bet that Verratti, Insigne, Florenzi and maybe even Gabbiadini would have been in the squad at the expense of some of those other mediocre options.

The future for the Italian NT is looking pretty good.

pff, 2006 contained guys like Zaccardo, Barone and Perrotta who were no better than these. yeah, overall it was stronger, but there still were a few pretty average guys. I can't comment on the 90ties, but every Italy squad I've seen since 2002 WC had some questionable players, the weakest probably being the 2010 edition.

There's barely any good young CBs anymore anywhere. Nowhere near the level of defenders we saw in the 90s and early 00s.
Hmm...

Varane
Nastasic
Mangala
Zouma
Marquinhos
Inigo Martinez

Just from the top of my head, it's just funny that none of them is Italian. There are a few but yeah quality has dropped.
