Rooney isn't overrated IMO, but he could become a 2nd Owen: being a great promise, but always remaining a great promise.
To me, calling someone a "second Owen" immediately says "overrated".

IMO, buying Rooney now is like buying shares of Netscape right after its IPO. Bubble city, baby.

Shrek is so unbelievably overated.... like all English players.
Sorry River, I have to agree. :D

Pretty boy Beckham, Michael "I have to kick ball down the centre to score a penalty" Owen, Steven "another red" Gerrard, Emile "I just flat out suck" Hesky, Rio "I don't need a drug test" Ferdinand and the Neville Brothers all give case to point. No Lampard or Joe Cole though, as they are rather decent. :D

True, but I said he could become a second Owen. If he does, he's overrated. But at the moment it isn't fair to call a 17-year old who was the only bright spot for England in an international tournament overrated.

No question that he was the dominant force for England in Euro 2004, with maybe Lampard and Campbell pulling up in second.

But four games in Euro 2004 does not provide a great indicator of what he'll accomplish over the next couple of 38-game, plus CL, seasons. He's riding a temporary high with a lot more to prove in terms of consistency. Which makes him a very risky proposition at the price he's currently commanding.

Afterall, this guy was only born after Maldini had a couple seasons of Serie A under his belt. Think about that one for a moment. :dazed:

Ok im not gonna bother will all this again or ever again infact.

But since your obviously talking alot of crap here ill highlight a few things.

Beckham may be overrated, but thats just because he is rated to a unreal level. Fact is he is still the best right midfielder and perhaps crosser of the ball in the world.

Steven Gerrard is a great player, to not agree with that is simply to not like him for being English. There isnt another alternative.

Rio Ferdinand maybe so, but whos calling him something special?

Neville Brothers??? You are just getting rediculous now. Who the hell EVER rated the Neville brothers as something better than they are. Infact Phil Neville is hugely underrated. Jesus :D

About Owen its been said before. (look at real madrid transfer threads, im not going over all that crap again)

But yeah you guys are all right. These players suck but Del Piero, Trezeguet, Miccoli, Maresca etc etc are all totally great.

Andy maybe from now on you might want to put that you dont like these players rather than say they are overrated. ;)

Obviously it would be a big risk for any club to pay a big transfer sum for Rooney. And there's no doubt about the fact that Juventus shouldn't buy Rooney. But I do think that Rooney, as a 17 year old, isn't overrated based on his current outings. Of course he could very well become overrated, but at the moment Rooney really is something special.

Well, Del Piero is something different than the average English striker, you have to admit. Del Piero's case is like Beckham's: they are overrated, but only because they're rated to an unreal level. A level they both possessed at a moment in time btw.

The fact the Neville brothers play for Man United states that they're overrated. They shouldn't even get a place in a conference team. And because they play for United, although it's not very clear why, they earn themselves a place in the English team as well...which of course is ridicolous.

andy....how many times did stevie get sent off last year??.....and ur saying joe cole is better than steven gerrard.....have u seen the premiership lately??..if u dont like them, fair enough, but stereotyping a player based on wrong facts, claiming he is overated is imo wrong....gerrard single handely gave liverpool a decent position, and continues to be the driving force.

First of all River, I'm just kidding around. So don't take it so seriously. You know I'm not a big fan of these players, and I love to make fun of them every chance I get. :)

Beckham the best right midfielder in the world? Sorry, but thats a laughable River. :D Maybe, just maybe the pretty boy was the best crosser in the game at one point, but Luis Figo certainly has/had more skill than Becks could ever possibly grasp.

You're absolutely right River, I dispise Gerrard. :D In fact, I have watched him many times in the EPL (don't even try to question that, as it is the only league I can watch in abundance here), and like I said before he doesn't have much to offer other than rough challenges, a good outside shot, some passing skill, and an untimely temper. He gave Liverpool singlhandedly a decent spot IYO John? Did he score all the goals, make all the plays, stop every attack, make every save, and chose the lineups/tactics? Did he? The influence he has is less then you think. He is no Zidane or Deschamps I'm afraid. And yes, I do believe Joe Cole is more of a skilled player, no doubt. It might not have been seen because of the time Joe played last year, which wasn't frequent enough.

But the thing is River, that the reason I don't like some of these players is because of the fact they are overated. Why would I hate Gerrard in the first place? Am I an Everton fan or Man United fan? I sure hope not. :D

Beckham is a great crosser of the ball and takes some delightful free kicks and corners, but that's about it. He can't dribble, kick with his left foot or head to save his life. He's a good player, but if he looked like Luke Chadwick, to say that he'd be as popular as he is or that he would've got signed by Madrid is absurd.

I happen to like Steven Gerrard as a player; he's made some horrendous two-footed challenges in the past, but in general he's not a dirty player. I wish he'd score more of those wonder-goals though

Well Andy if thats the reason you dont like them then yeah whatever. Isnt alot of Juve (I can even go as far as say Italian league) players overrated? That dosent seem to trouble you. And I dont know where you people who dont live in England get all this over-rated crap from. Do you hold weekly 'who do you rate' contests or some shit? :D

Gerrard is rated as Liverpools driving force like John said. How is he overrated? Is Vieria overrated then? Was Davids overrated? I completely hate Liverpool FC and I can see how good he is in between calling him and the other players names, but the difference is i can forget that when judging a players quality. And then you went and compared him to Zidane and Joe Cole, completely different type of players.

And who said he was a Zidane, of course hes not :) Stop trying to put words in my mouth. You say hes overrated, im telling you hes not. The english press is the most critical in the world, im just not getting how foreigners seem to think this all the time. Maybe your doing alittle to much listening to the Liverpool and Man U fans at school?

Just like George Best said ;)

And of course he wouldnt be a world icon if he wasnt so good looking. But why let that skew your judgement of him as a player. So if im wrong Andy and Graham, how do you think is a better right midfielder? Figo? Zambrotta? Perhaps Figo but Figo isnt the old Figo anymore. Beckham on form like he was in the last England match is the best right midfielder in the world today, no question.

ahh it was George Best, I initally thought David O'Leary, but that couldn't be right :)

Yes, I think Zambrotta for one is a better right midfielder than Beckham. He's got more pace, better dribbling, better tackling, a better shot from open play, and has a fine cross too. Plus he's better looking

Giuly is another player who comes to mind.
