Ronaldinho crowned king of the world

ZURICH, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Barcelona's Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho was named FIFA World Player of the Year on Monday.
Ronaldinho, 24, totalled 620 points followed by Thierry Henry of Arsenal and France on 552. Newly-crowned European Footballer of the Year Andriy Shevchenko of AC Milan and Ukraine was third on 253.

'For me just to be selected and to be here was already an honour,' Ronaldinho told the FIFA gala awards ceremony.

'Of course I have to thank my Barcelona colleagues because I could not have won it without them.

'I am very happy at Barcelona, I want to be part of a new winning era at the club and I have no plans to go anywhere else,' he added, dismissing suggestions he might be interested in a move to Chelsea.

It was the second successive year that Henry has finished as runner-up in the poll based on the verdict of 157 international coaches and, for the first time this year, 145 national team captains.

Five points were awarded for a first place nomination, three for second and one for third. Ronaldinho gained 89 first place votes, Henry 79 and Shevchenko 34.

Last year's winner Zinedine Zidane, who announced his international retirement from the France team after Euro 2004, came fourth. Last year's European Footballer of the Year Pavel Nedved of the Czech Republic was fifth.

Ronaldinho has transformed Barcelona since arriving from Paris St Germain in 2003 and they lead the Primera Liga by nine points. Unlike his rivals for the award, organised by world soccer's governing body FIFA, Ronaldinho did not win a major club trophy this year.

Ronaldinho did not take part in the Copa America won by Brazil as he was rested along with Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos.

He is the fourth Brazilian to capture the award since its introduction in 1991 after Romario (1994), three times winner Ronaldo (1996, 1997 and 2002) and Rivaldo (1999).

Remarkably, they all won the award when playing for Barcelona, though after his first success Ronaldo was with Inter Milan in 1997 and Real Madrid in 2002.

Germany's Birgit Prinz won women's player of the year, the Presidents' Award went to Haiti for promoting the match for peace against Brazil and Brazil took the Fair Play award.

IMO Henry deserved it.he's played in an excellent level for years but he hasn't ever won an award.I think this award is worthless than golden ball since once one of coaches choosed Ali Daei as the best player of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is from Brazil which is a huge bonus, he's done a great work for Barca and for Brazil and he deserves it more than Henry

Shevchenko should've done the double imo. His consistency when it comes to goalscoring in the world's most difficult league is phenomenal and it's not like if he hasn't been performing on the European stage either. Henry's achievements over these last two seasons have been amazing too, but I rate Sheva as better than him. Milan's sharpshooter would chew up and spit back out the Premier League if he were to ever play there. Ronaldinho? The world's best player at this point in time, no-one matches up to him talent-wise, but I think Andriy deserves the award.

Look at Arsenal and look at Barca! You can't judge a player by a teams accomplishments, if that was the case Roque Junior could have won the award for winning a CL with Milan. IMO Shevchenko should have been runner up, not Henry the choker.

He is the key player that make his team accopmlish something that is never archived before...i think he should won it more than Ronaldinho...

beside, i dont think individually Henry is inferior to Ronaldinho this year..

Henry does not deserve it, that's a fact. Ronaldinho has not won anything since the World Cup, and the reason why he won this award is because he is a flashy player, with loads of tricks.

Lemme ask you this. If Roonaldinho happened to be from the United States or Canada, and still was lighting up Europe, do you think the award would be given to him in that case? No way. Since Ronaldinho is Brazilian, he gets, for lack of a better phrase, "special treatment."

The award should have gone to Deco in my opinion. He guided his club Porto to winning the CL last season with his brilliant attacking displays. He basically controlled the flow and pace of the best club in the world, which happened to be an underdog side Porto. That is pretty damn good to me. Shevchenko was the best striker in the world, and he would come second in my books. This FIFA award should be given to a champion.

But he did jack shit in Europe. Taking your league by storm is one thing, taking Europe by storm is another.
