Actually, English isn't all that simple. We underestimate it cause we're done learning it, but for a lot of people it seems terribly complicated. There are lots of verb tenses in English, for instance, we say "I'm writing" where in other languages you're much more likely to say simply "I write".

Anything that's familiar seems easy, though.

No, I just got my eyes opened by meeting some people who didn't take English for granted. Had a friend in college who was from China and basically when he talked I understood what he was trying to say but few others did.
