It's only game in town. In order to incorporate a more European model, we'd have to completely overhaul the way athletics are structured in the US.
Who is going to want to come and play in the US that hasn't already been a great success? The MLS doesn't really have the cash flow to compete with the top European leagues for transfer fees and salaries. There is no "Champion's league" (there is but it's nowhere near the cash cow of the European version) to draw top players. There is no great footballing history.

Its not about rejecting players from playing here but not signing almost has-been players whose main draw are the millions they're going to get before their retire.
I think they should just focus on their own home grown talent and not sign aging players on ridiculous deals from abroad. You should build history and not try to buy it. The Chelsea and Man City model creates the atmosphere mercenaries live off of and that doesn't help build history.
I couldn't call Henry a has-been though. He's only 32, so he has a couple good years left.
Unfortunately, to increase the stature of the league and to have it gain more respect, having top-notch Europeans over here is a must. This is also important from a business perspective. And lets face it, football is all about business nowadays.

The majority of the players in the MLS are young Americans. So the base is there. You've got guys like Omar Gonzalez, Tristan Bowen, Robbie Findley, etc coming up.
The Beckham deal was a debacle, no doubt about it.
But signing players like Lungberg, Henry, Angel, isn't going to hurt the league's development. You have to remember that it's still under 20 years old, it's still growing.
