As long as Trap is in charge, Italy will never fulfill it's enormous potential to be able to play attacking football with an attacking formation. With Trap, it's 4-4-2 this and 4-4-2 that...However, the following is my dream Italy line-up:

Buffon
Oddo Cannavaro Nesta Coco
Pirlo
Zambrotta Di Natale
Totti
Del Piero Corradi

As you can see, the above formation is a 4-1-2-1-2, with the emphasis on the attack. Pirlo would be in a position to move forward but be able to help out the defence, while Zambrotta and Di Natale would be based in the centre but move out wide. Totti would be given a free role while I think Del Piero and Corradi would be great paired together.

When was the last time any coach for Italy used an attacking lineup? It's always defence first, always has been and most likely always will be.

And we keep piling on the blame on Trapattoni. I do it myself, but do the players take none of the blame? It's absolutely ridiculous to think not. Many of them play horribly in the WC, and that has nothing to do with the formation they use.

And anyone who says that Del Piero and Inzaghi should play together up front, you must be insane. When was the last time the 2 of them played well together for Italy? Answer: NEVER!

Del Piero and Vieri or even Totti and Vieri is 300x times better than Del Piero/Inzaghi.

Di Natale and Corradi have played 1 international each. Sure, they both played well in them, but it's hard to say if they will be there in the future. Di Natale has not impressed since returning from injury.

    Oddo? What's he done lately?

The only way to find out whether or not Di Natale and Corradi are NT material is to give them more opportunities to wear the blue of the Azzurri, and if not Oddo then who? Panucci?

Finland has some very talented players. Niemi's been one of the better keepers in the EPL this season, Hyypia is a monster in defence. Should be a good game.

Goalkeepers - Peter Enckelman (Aston Villa), Jussi Jaaskelainen (Bolton Wanderers), Antti Niemi (Southampton)

Defenders - Markus Heikkinen (Portsmouth), Sami Hyypia (Liverpool), Ville Nylund (HJK Helsinki), Petri Pasanen (Ajax), Janne Saarinen (Rosenborg Trondheim), Hannu Tihinen (Anderlecht)

Midfielders - Jari Ilola (Elfsborg), Joonas Kolkka (Panathinaikos), Peter Kopteff (Viking Stavanger), Jari Litmanen (Ajax), Mika Nurmela (Heerenveen), Aki Riihilahti (Crystal Palace), Teemu Tainio (AJ Auxerre), Simo Valakari (Derby County)

Forwards - Mikael Forssell (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Shefki Kuqi (Sheffield Wednesday), Jonatan Johansson (Charlton Athletic).

italy should go back to 3-5-2... we don't have width so no point in playing wingers.

finland looks dangerous, they have a keeper who can score goals ;)

From what I know, Finland are stronger in the centre than they are out wide, and imo it would be easier to break down their defence with wide players in our offensive third, hence the 4-2-3-1 formation that was used against Portugal.

In the middle of defence, Finland have two very good players in Hyypia and Pasanen, but who do they have at right back and left back?

Here's the team I would play on March 29th.

    Buffon - Oddo,Nesta,Cannavaro,Zambrotta - Tacchinardi,Ambrosini - Camoranesi,Totti,Del Piero - Vieri

    Inzaghi forfeits Finnish test

Pippo Inzaghi and Alex Del Piero are out of Saturday’s crucial qualifier with Finland, but Giovanni Trapattoni opts for young stars.

Inzaghi and Gattuso picked up muscular problems during the 2-1 victory over Juventus and Milan medical staff suggested they were not fit to play in the Euro 2004 qualifier.

Alessandro Del Piero also featured in that match, but needs more time on the field to fully recover after six weeks out with a thigh strain.

However, Christian Vieri and Francesco Totti have recovered from on-going fitness worries and return to the Azzurri fold.

Giovanni Trapattoni has made some interesting selections, calling Bernardo Corradi and Fabrizio Miccoli for their first official caps after impressing in the friendly 1-0 win over Portugal.

Lazio midfielder Stefano Fiore and ‘Oriundo’ Mauro Camoranesi are also included in the squad set to face Finland on Saturday evening in Sicily.

Curiously, Gianluca Zambrotta has been included in the midfielders despite his recent transformation to a defensive role.

It remains to be seen whether or not Trap will stick with his tried and tested 4-4-2 or the experimental 4-2-3-1 shown against Portugal.

The players will meet at the Coverciano training ground on Monday morning.

    Gk: Buffon, Toldo
D: Cannavaro, Ferrari, Legrottaglie, Panucci, Birindelli, Nesta
M: Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Perrotta, Tommasi, Pirlo, Fiore Zanetti
F: Delvecchio, Corradi, Miccoli, Totti, Vieri

    -Football Italia-

    ...............

What the heck is a ‘Oriundo’?

And Tacchi not in that list? :wallbang:

Why wasn't Del Piero selected for this match? Yea, I know that he's only just come back from injury, but he was fit to play 45 minutes against Milan, so why shouldn't he be alright to go for an hour a week later? :undecide:

Anyways, it's good to see younger players like Corradi and Miccoli in the squad, and Delvecchio was quite impressive against Portugal, so I don't mind him in there either.

I believe an 'Oriundo' is someone born outside of Italy who plays for the Nazionale, and why Tacchi isn't in the squad is beyond my comprehension.

Perrotta has done nothing in the last 2 friendlies, so it's time to stop that experiment. Trap said he doesn't think Del Piero is ready for a full 90, and he may not be.

No real surprises in the squad, unless you count Del Piero not being there. :)

    Forza Azzurri!
