Inzaghi forfeits Finnish test
Pippo Inzaghi and Alex Del Piero are out of Saturday’s crucial qualifier with Finland, but Giovanni Trapattoni opts for young stars.
Inzaghi and Gattuso picked up muscular problems during the 2-1 victory over Juventus and Milan medical staff suggested they were not fit to play in the Euro 2004 qualifier.
Alessandro Del Piero also featured in that match, but needs more time on the field to fully recover after six weeks out with a thigh strain.
However, Christian Vieri and Francesco Totti have recovered from on-going fitness worries and return to the Azzurri fold.
Giovanni Trapattoni has made some interesting selections, calling Bernardo Corradi and Fabrizio Miccoli for their first official caps after impressing in the friendly 1-0 win over Portugal.
Lazio midfielder Stefano Fiore and ‘Oriundo’ Mauro Camoranesi are also included in the squad set to face Finland on Saturday evening in Sicily.
Curiously, Gianluca Zambrotta has been included in the midfielders despite his recent transformation to a defensive role.
It remains to be seen whether or not Trap will stick with his tried and tested 4-4-2 or the experimental 4-2-3-1 shown against Portugal.
The players will meet at the Coverciano training ground on Monday morning.
