The general consensus of the EPL fans is that their teams don't do well in CL because their competition is tougher and it tires the players out.

Well I think there could be some truth in that, but it's not that EPL teams are tougher, it's because they play more games than most european teams (they also play the efl cup). I remember in the early 2000s, when it's still called the carling cup, epl teams used to field their youngsters. Now they take the cup seriously, so no wonder their players are more tired. Well, it's their choice though.
