I've a query. Not necessarily a PC issue, but it's close :D
Since I live in a city where power outages is common, I want to invest in a UPS which can power my modem and wifi router. Since I use laptops, I don't need backup for my PCs. Question is, will they run on a UPS since they use minuscule power? Anyone in the third world tried this? :D

I do that to use Wifi on my phone, My Rs.1600 Mercury Ups powers my router for about 1 hr. But I have a router+modem in the same device. Since you have two I would say 30 - 40 mins.

Guys, I need your help.
So I was on my Toshiba laptop of 7 years today, watching porn online, suddenly everything froze and the laptop started making this clicking/tripping noise. I pressed the on/off button naturally, but now this message appears on a black screen: A disk read error occured, press ctrl+alt+del to restart. Please help :(

You need to replace your hard disk. Backup all the stuff using Ubuntu Live CD and then get a new hard disk and install whatever OS you want to use.

My wifi router is behaving weird. Or at least I think it is. I get good download speeds on my main laptop, but for every other device connected (two other laptops) the speeds are drastically low (1/20th to 1/10th) of what I get on my primary laptop. Any idea why? I'm running a Cisco E900 router with DD-WRT firmware.

So, lately(these past two weeks). My CPU has been very high when i'm in example Google Chrome & Steam etc. It makes my laptop very warm and slow.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

In the end it turns out that it wasn't a router issue. I was using proprietary drivers from Broadcom on Ubuntu and it was hogging the network. Once I switched to open drivers that come with Ubuntu, the issue vanished.
I think I switched to the proprietary driver because the WiFi connection kept dying on me with the open drivers. Now I've to choose between the network being hogged (and endure the wife's murderous stares) or turn the WiFi control on Ubuntu off and on several times a day. Decisions, decisions.
