He is right about his first touch, sometimes its just awful, but I think its more about beign used to have much more space when playing for Palermo rather than lack of technical ability.

He's exaggerating massively though, his first touch is slightly below average at best.

Only reason it seems so bad is because his dribbling skills & ball control are amazing apart from that.

Dyabala tries to use his first touch to immediatly tick the ball in the direction he'll burst into. Wich is a bit tricky, tends to go wrong, but brilliant when it doesnt.

Certainly something he'll finetune

People complaining about his first touch.

He usually tries to play the ball into space like Zach said. It's his way of creating space for himself.

Brazillian ronaldo used to do that often. its devastating because if you do it correctly, you are either clear into space away from the marker, or he has to pull you down for a yellow. its one of my favorite moves.

that and the sideway turn straight outta fifa that alex sandro does (run straight line, put right foot in front of ball, turn with your left shoulder moving counter clockwise wilst dragging the ball with your left foot. its like a roulette, but 270° and exit to the right). excellent way to rotate out of a challenge whilst protecting the ball. requires good close controll to pull off

Yep. That's exactly what he used to do, he opened space with his first touch just giving the defender enough time to get right there at the ball left with 2 choices; being left behind by a lightning quick skill or going for the card. Ronaldo was a master at this though and had the confidence of a lion, Dybala is pretty average in this specific style. But he'll get better I'm sure.

I think its exceptionally diffifult to pull off. when juggeling or controlling, you learn how to keep it close or go in ways. however, getting a pass and making the first pass kick in a specific direction and angle, with the right speed, its so hard. I've never seen anyone quite master that like ronaldo, who got the ball 40 meters from goal, with back to the goal into feet, then did that and turned and bursted into space, and before the defender knew what happened, he had 5-10 meters allready.

Now, there is talk about "dybala very high acceleration but slow lasting topspeed".

well, this move is tailored on hil. he can make the most out of his acceleration to create a gab, and you need to be quite fast to remotely catch up

Really all it is IMO is an attempt to preemptively get a couple steps on the defender before they realize it. Most players control the ball closely then make their move. Dybala pops the ball into a small pocket of space.
