A good player wouldn't need a whole midfield built around him to flourish. You simply can give him the ball and expect to bring the team forward even if he doesn't have runners in midfield covering for him.

Ajax absolutely ripped Lyon and Schalke a new one at home but failed to make it difficult for United.
It was a team with Davinson Sanchez who was sold to Spurs for big bucks and is one of the best CB's in the EPL atm.
They were a Europa League team for a reason. The odds in their favour? Give it a rest. Beating Schalke and Lyon like it's some sort of big accomplishment?
United has spent like 700 million net on the transfer market in the last 5 years. Ajax has spent pennies.
United had 100 million dollar Pogba, 50 mil Martial, 45 mil Mata, 40 million Mkhi off bundesliga player of the year, 35 mil Herrera, 30 mil Bailly, and so on and so forth. United's squad is worth 10x what Ajax's is worth. Ajax didn't even win the sad sack Dutch League last year Ffs.
They're supposed to be running with the big boys, not playing minnows like Ajax in the Europa League. United losing that match would have been appallingly embarrassing given the money they have spent especially alongside finishing 6th in their league.

The odds were never in Ajax's favour as they were a really young group, they did play some nice football last season but aswell had an relatively easy road to the final, they eliminated the likes of Legia Warsaw, Copenhagen , broken Shalke and a unlucky Lyon to get there, all of their games being very evenly matched with Ajax coming close to elimination on most of those occasions, if anything i'd label them as extremely lucky for reaching last seasons final, they were just counting solely on enthusiasm while obviously lacking any type of experience.
Any decently strong/organized defensively opponent could have got the better of them last season, especially for a defensive minded coach as Mourinho who has a superstar team at his disposal, this game was more or less won before it even started, with or without Pogba,Ibrahimovic etc...

Ye Ajax were cannon fodder for Man United, United had the easiest run of games of any EL team I have ever seen to lifting the trophy
One player missed an open goal against them in the dying minutes to win the game and knock them out and of course he missed it
They did what they had to do to win but they were far from convincing and had the easiest fixtures imaginable

Those were at least 4 or 5 players that weren't starters for United at all.. All five bold players played less than 20 games in the Prem therefor I'm inclined to say that the odds were in Ajax's favour
It wasn't easy to adjust to such a squad, but Mourinho showed great tactical ability in that final.
