Pogba is easily the midfielder who get's the most freedom on our team, and to be honest even as a "CAM" he'd be asked to defend as he does right now, every player here is asked for defensive contribution.
I don't believe football is as rigid as those numbers suggest, if we play 3-5-2, 4-3-1-2, 3-4-1-2... I don't think it matters really, formations are not symmetric, not every player fills their spot exactly the same as the one next to him, or the one on the other side of the pitch.
Some people turn crazy at the slightest suggestion of Dybala playing on a 4-3-3, or something other than not an specifically named SS. Messi plays on a "4-3-3" that has Suárez as a CF, yet he seems to be doing OK, even when he has been playing as a CF for the most part of the latest years. I don't think it matters where you "place" a player on a formation, they have their own style, their movements and tasks asked by their coach, formations are nothing more than a way to simplify it for people to understand them.

You surely never kicked a ball in your life, lol. Defensive work always influence attacking players because it tires them much more (than attacking). It's so much easier to play with the ball but I can see why Allegri prefers Pogba as LCM/B2B and why he'd like to have someone else for the AM spot (which I believe he still wants). Pogba is too much of a beast to not use him while defending, because he's tall and very strong. He can also keep the ball very well under pressure as well as drive it from our halt to opponent's. It'd be a waste to have 3 CMs that can only defend and putting Pogba as AM on top of that.
Besides we have had too many injuries this season so Allegri didn't really have a chance to experiment with midfield. Poor start made him fight for every point because if he won nothing this year his future here wouldn't look too bright.

Pogba's offensive game is based on receving the ball early and advance. And he's a great tackler actually, against Milan he had more successful tackles than any other player on the pitch. Restricting him as an AM is basically ruining everything what makes him great for this team and individually.

As I wrote I don't agree that defending doesn't influence Pogba's offensive game which you implied.
I would love to see him as AM, but to do that he seems to need to mature more. Some months ago he seemed to take all the wrong decitions in the 3/4 of the field (impossible shots, trying to dribble 4 players and losing the ball etc, being annoying), and thats a no go for a treq... but as of late he seems to be playing more composed with every passing game.
If Allegri used Vidal as a false treq, i dont see how he cannot use pogba who has a GREAT tackle and an eye for passes goals and dribbles. But i can see the issue of not letting pogba recover the ball deeper and help on the midfield, as he can do that very well.
If we sign berardi, i would like to see Pogba, Morata, DYbala and berardi all at the same time...and by using pogba as a treq this will not be possible,
So for the time being.. he will have to stay where he is, which is very good anyways.

If it was up to me I still would try Pogba as AM because we have a freak talent in the squad and still no treq Allegri asked for since he came. With Conte I was questioning his decisions all the time but Allegri taught me not to do it any more with CL final and the team's revival. I do it only on occasions like Alex Sandro being benched for Evra

The current box-to-box role is ideal for him. It's even adjusted a bit as he regulary goes into the oppositions box looking to recieve passes or contest a header.
Making him into a trequartista would only limit his influence on the pitch. Modern playmakers are all in the mould of Iniesta, tricky little guys with quick feet who are always moving between the lines and playing short passes. Pogba dwells to much on the ball, as he's almost impossible to get knocked off the ball and taken posession from. For that he needs space and a trequartista usually has to create space for himself as the middle of the pitch is always packed with opposition players.

He doesn't go into the box too much though. I'm not sure if I consider that a waste or a good thing considering his height and technique are both plus points.

Is it any coincidence that Pogba is a different player now that the team as a whole is settled? Does he really rely on the rest of the squad that much or was all of the responsibility just a big shock for him and he has adjusted to it now? How confident would you be in him carrying our midfield and team should we have a similarly depleted squad again?
