Madrid wanting him should make a lot of sense. Their squad is very unbalanced because all their CMs are very offensive/creative and can play as CAMs, that is on top of the actual CAMs they have in their squad. He also has the star profile that fits Madrid's marketing like a glove. And there is Zidane.
Enter Rakib mode: If they do go after him, we should take players rather than money because you'll be hardly pressed to get any creative CMs or CAMs that are better than what Madrid have and we have the reverse problem that they have, namely that our CMs (apart from Pogba who is very well balanced) are more defensive than creative. Even our bench is Asamoah, Lemina, Sturaro are all defensive. They have Isco, James, Kroos, Modric, Kovacic all of which are creative but not defensive.
If they want the next world superstar they should give us two of their extras. Someone is going to snap these guys and its better to be us than them. Give us James and Kroos and they can have Pogba. If world class quality is leaving then we should replace him with world class players and not just players with potential. Even money wise that would be like getting 100-120 mills for Pogba. They will also be able to field a midfield of Pogba, Modric, with Isco as CAM if they play 4-2-3-1 which is much more balanced than having Kroos there.
James is one of the best CAMs in the world, certainly on a higher level than Gotze, Mata, Oscar, and Isco. Kroos is a world class CM that can play next to Marchisio and Khedira and can also play CAM at a pretty high level. Nothing says two birds one stone better than such a deal. I also can't think of a better playmaker that we could possibly get. He is better than Pjanic, Fabregas or anyone else I can think of that we could try to buy with money.
We are already one world class midfielder short with Pogba on the team because of Khedira's lack of reliability. If Pogba leaves to Madrid, we should get one CM from them and we should buy another one from our pockets (not from the Pogba money).
Kroos - Marchisio- Khedira is great. Kroos - Marchisio and a New signing would even be better.
