It doesnt excuse ofcourse, whatever happens next hes always gonna have this on his legacy. He was at his peak in 2016, he could have went for the CL in barcelona, Madrid, PSG or staying put. He chose a weak team, probably bought into the Mourinho and Zlatan hype. Raiola, money, fame, huge fanbase, "home", dumbass friends like Lingard. A lot of factors, had they succeeded in waking up the fallen giant it would have turned out great for him legacy wise. But they didnt and hes alao to blame.
Having said all that, doubting him as a player i dont think is fair. First, he wasnt terrible there, he had his fair share of great games. And 2nd, like i said, he needs to be seen in a different envirovement first, before dubbing him finished or overrated etc

Because of those 4-5 years he's always going to be a risk, especially for what he'll cost. But if a manager and club truly believe they can get the best out of him. IMO that is a high ceiling.
