Evra: 'I'll shake Suarez's hand'
By Football Italia staff

Patrice Evra said he will “shake his hand” when meeting Luis Suarez in tonight’s Champions League Final.

The pair clashed in a bitter feud during Liverpool v Manchester United in October 2011 and Suarez sat out an eight-match ban for using racist language.

They face off again in Berlin when Juventus and Barcelona challenge for the Champions League.

“I don’t want his apologies,” Evra told ITV Sport. “It doesn’t matter, it’s no problem for me. But when we are going to play the game, I will shake his hand.

“He will never be my best friend, but this is not a problem. The past is the past. I am really proud of my colour and I will shake his hand like I did with Manchester when we play against Liverpool.

“My game is against Barcelona, it is not against Luis Suarez, but I will make sure he will feel me on the pitch.

“I didn’t say to the judge that Luis Suarez is a racist person. I just say in that moment he have some racist comment.

“I didn’t go there and say now 'you have to punish him, he is a racist person.’ I don’t know that because I don’t know Luis Suarez very well to talk about it.

“I controlled myself, I behaved myself. In that moment I remember, it was like a voice inside my head – 'don’t do nothing stupid, don’t do nothing stupid, don’t punch him or do something stupid because a lot of people are watching this game’.

“For some kid, you have to show the example. If I do something wrong, maybe today I won’t be playing the final of the Champions League – I will get maybe a three-year ban or something like that.

“Sir Alex Ferguson after the game, and all my team-mates, they saw my face. I was in another galaxy in that moment.

“A lot of things were happening in my head. It was a really difficult day, but I was really proud of myself.”

There was set to be another reunion for Suarez, the first with Giorgio Chiellini since biting him on the shoulder in the 2014 World Cup match between Italy and Uruguay.

However, the Juventus defender will only be in the stands in Berlin due to a calf injury.

Nice interview, seems a good guy and handled the Suarez issue perfectly.

Always good to hear a footballer thinking about their actions.

Bullies HATE when their victims don't get flustered so I wondered what Suarez thought at the time.

GOD I wish Chiellini was playing.

It would be nice to see fate take the side of the nice guy for a change instead of the idiot. Arrogance like that shouldn't be rewarded (Suarez).

I think we all had our doubts at the start of the season, but he has been so solid, so consistent. We couldn't have made it to the final without him.

I hope we have some good fullbacks lined up for when licht and evra lose their legs, its such an important position for us, especially when we have no wide midfielders or forwards.

I really like the way he drives the team forward, I don't think many notice it but he is a fucking legendary leader. I wish he has a few more years in his legs.

Evra was immense today. All of Barca's goals came from their left side because the right side was impenetrable.

That tackle on Messi in the second half :delpiero:

Hope we can find a young LB that can develop and learn behind him until he retires. Could even use that player in serie a and just use evra in CL matches.
