Of course there should be scrutiny and doubt. I'm not proclaiming that the Chinese are always virtuous and honest (Lulz). However, this kid has performed admirably and won, at least as far as we know. There's no need for the Australian swimmer to sound like a sour grumpy cunt immediately after he received his silver medal, and for his coach to come out with baseless accusations.
It’s like Trump- the election is rigged, but only if he loses.

So historical cheating? I think every country has examples, but surely those caught are not the same as those who are probably cheating and get away with it, isn't that the point? I've also no doubt that all sport has hidden cheats that got away with it.

The issue is current Chinese irregular results, some of these athletes have twice failed drug tests. Do you think CHINADA is impartial? I certainly don't. It's China ffs. Chinese people don't even know about these allegations because they are completely censored in the country. But at the same time there is political posturing between WADA and USADA/US government because it is Chinese athletes, no doubt.

So you have a recent upturn in results for Chinese swimmers running alongside some very dodgy looking results that CHINADA has said are OK, and WADA has backed them. The Americans, imo rightly, are concerned about Chinese influence over WADA (because they'd rather have this position). And this is a country that has systematically doped before, in the 90s with the same sudden upturn in results, a country who have previously applied state-sponsored doping. A country who employed proven East German dopers to develop their swimming program back in the day. Forgive me for not believing this country.

So it's quite easy for the Chinese swimmers under scrutiny to pose with their gold medals and post "haters gonna hate LOL" on their social media but we've seen this all before, these are genuine concerns. It's not all east v west power plays. Russia systematically doped. China may be doing it too in certain areas. But in a country of a billion with their methods of coaching they will have some talent for sure.
I understand your point.

It's true that certain countries appear to have a very systematic approach when it comes to doping. Russia and China certainly come to mind.

But even if there seems to be less involvement of state actors in Europe and North America, there have been countless athletes from those regions who were in fact doping. And let's be frank, in track and field people have been doubting countries like Jamaica, Kenia and Ethiopia for a very long time now because their local anti doping agencies seem reluctant to do regular testing.

Under those circumstances it's a bit odd to single out athletes from a particular region or country and accuse them of doping before there has been a conclusive test. History tells us that pretty much anyone can be doping anyway.

I prefer to react on a cheat-by-cheat basis, where possible.

I will admit I think about it less and less these days.

I have my doubts about Jakob Ingebrigtsen. It's difficult to say why, I just don't trust him and his results at all. But I don't want to be thinking about that during his races, that takes all the fun out of it.

China won 21 gold medals so far. Only 3 of them are in swimming and athletics. The remaining gold medals are in: Shooting (5), Diving (4), Table tennis (3), Badminton (2), Artistic gymnastics (2), Cycling BMX (1), Tennis (1).

Even if we accept that doping is the reason for their golds in swimming and athletics (20km race walk), they'd still have 18 gold medals and they'd be comfortably in 2nd place overall. I think it's unfair to use "doping" as an explanation for their success at the last 3-4 Olympics.

Everybody is juicing, not just the Chinese.
I don't think everyone is juicing, but a lot definitely are.

Someone like Femke Bol is weird. If you look at the results, she almost has to be on something. She's obliterating everyone else and does so race after race in event after event. But then you look at the way she runs and her composure in interviews and there's just no way I can imagine her cheating. Maybe it's naive, but I hope these freaks of nature exist.

You think Usain Bolt was juicing?

I do not and I have three reasons for that:

- Bolt dominated Olympic and World Championships from 2008 until 2016. That is a very long timeframe in which he had to have been among the most tested athletes in the world.

- His career was gradual. He was winning international youth championships as early as 2002 and started to fizzle out after 30 (which you'd expect from a sprinter).

- His character does not appear to be that of someone willing to do whatever it takes to get results. His coaches even consistently complained it was hard to get him to train in the first place.

I'd be very surprised if it turns out he was cheating. But you never really know.

I was only speaking about doubts in swimming, tbh. It's clear that they focus on many sports and have the means to do that. They've always been strong in a few events.

Yeah, I know. My comment wasn't a reply to anyone here.
It's just that since the 2008 Olympics I hear a lot of accusations regarding the Chinese doping, and, unlike you, those folks spoke in general terms, which left an impression that almost all Chinese athletes are winning in an unfair fashion.

I have to say, for someone as small as she is is, Simone Biles sure has a lot of bile inside.

She's competing with women, who aren't even earning enough money to live on. Nina Derwael (Belgian gold medal winner in 2021 on the uneven bars) has hardly made a killing. She can just about cover her expenses. Biles in the meantime is sitting on a fortune of several tens of millions of dollars, because she's a tremendous athlete but also due to the fact she happens to be American.

Maybe be a tiny bit grateful?

I appreciate the gesture towards the Brazilian girl, but Biles really misbehaved the last few weeks. Shocking mentality.

The feud with MyKayla Skinner she chose to make public. The reaction towards the crowd, she blamed for shushing.

She's picking fights for no reason whatsoever.
Just did a quick google search, seems like a tabloid non story.

at least she didn’t call her a man

Not really, it's pretty much literally Biles calling her out.

I get it. She's under a lot of stress. But man, she's got all these gold medals and millions in the bank. Why bother?

Lol Patty has been end of fringe bench player for 4-5 teams per season past years. Like he sees no minutes.

But as soon as he puts on Aussie shirt he turns into Kyrie Irving LOL
