Pakistani authorities ban access to YouTube

Saturday, 23 February , 2008, 08:36

Islamabad: Pakistani authorities on Friday banned access to the popular video-hosting website YouTube for allegedly featuring blasphemous cartoons of Prophet Mohammed.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority directed Internet service providers across the country to block access to youtube.com.

A statement issued to customers by Micronet Broadband, one of Pakistan's leading internet service providers said, 'Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has directed all ISPs of the country to block access to YouTube for containing blasphemous web content/movies'.

The website would remain blocked till further orders from the PTA.

Micronet urged Internet users to 'write to YouTube to remove the objectionable web content/movies because this removal would enable the authorities to order un-blocking of this website'.

The blasphemous cartoons had triggered widespread protests across Pakistan when they were originally published. Pakistan's foreign ministry recently registered a strong protest with the Danish government against the republication of the cartoons in that country.

Freedom of Speech:blah:

Any other muslim countries facing this?Im extremley pissed off.Parlty at the extremist tards in this country, and partly at the danish media.Im not trying to give out any anti-dane vibes here, but seriously, the freedom of speech thing has been dragged too far now.

P.S.Are there any other good video hosting sites?I upload vidoes reguarly, and youtube was pretty helpful. Now i need a new website.Any suggestions?

Freedom of speech is just about the most cherished right people have had throughout the centuries. If Danish media wants to publish material not in violation of Danish law then they damn well are going to do just that.

And you know just as well as I do that the only reason they did these cartoons is precisely because they wanted to expose the megalomania of people who think they have the right to dictate the rules by which other people have to live. It's not by accident they chose Mohammed, not Moses or Jesus or what have you. The reason this is being done is that Denmark (and not Denmark alone) has a serious problem and denial is not the answer.

To change the subject somewhat, internet censorship is on the rise now that a lot of governments have figured out how to do it. The greatest gift of the internet is that no one controls it, but chunks of it are increasingly being closed off for certain groups of people. And it isn't the Danish media doing this to you, by the way. China is the most sophisticated censor, but in countries like Burma and Cuba the government has priced access to technology way out of people's hands.

Only Youtube is banned there or and the other broadcasting video sites?
It's politics. As long as you are seen to do something then people are pacified. Youtube is the biggest so you ban that. Plenty of other sites are still available, but as a politician you can always say "well, we banned youtube, don't we get credit for that?". And you're saved.

like the danes could give a flying fuck about youtube being banned from Pakistan......
good job Pakistani governemnt. way to show your intelligence! why not ban the entire internet as well? since you can pretty much find these cartoons by a simple search. Oh and why not ban people from seeing each other then? since people can talk and ask for some photo copies of the cartoons.

I hate idiotic politicians and extremist religious figures.

I am starting to grow a profound hate towards certain muslim groups and TBH with the failure of multicultural society as it is already, I find myself opposed to the islamisation of certain areas in my own city in Belgium.

You know, there are several videos out there that have pictures of dicks in Jesus' mouth, but you don't see anybody banning shit for that reason.

Not trying to provoke, but it appears to me that on average the Muslim society is 500-1000 years behind on the Christian.

    Which city is that?

I never read a funnier shit than this one.

Look. If you mean it from a technical or a military viewpoint, then you're definitely right.

If you take it from an ethical viewpoint, you can reverse your sentence.
