VILLA DENY MELLBERG JUVE REPORTS

Aston Villa have denied reports that defender Olof Mellberg will quit the club at the end of the season to join Juventus.

The Sweden international has been linked with a move to the Italian giants and the Birmingham Post claim the 30-year-old visited Turin on Tuesday to be given a tour of the Serie A club before undergoing a medical.

But a Villa spokesman said: "Olof going to Turin or anywhere is news to us at Aston Villa."

Villa boss Martin O'Neill has spelt out his desire to retain the services of Mellberg, who this season has switched from centre-back to operate effectively at right-back.

Only last week the Irishman said: "I'm understanding of Olof. It is not as if Olof has any distinct disregard for the club. He has been here seven years and this (contract) is really important for him.

"There will be a host of interest in Olof and I think he wants to see what is there for him because this is a really important stage for him. Would I like Olof to stay? Absolutely

O'Neill confirms Juve approach

Villa boss hopes to keep defender

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed for the first time that Juventus have shown an interest in signing Olof Mellberg.

The Swedish defender has been rumoured to be a long-term target of Juventus and there has been fresh speculation that Mellberg has held contract discussions with the Italian giants.

Mellberg's current deal with Villa expires in the summer, meaning he could sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in the transfer window, and O'Neill has confirmed that Juventus have asked for permission to speak to the 30-year-old.

"Juventus have sent a letter through saying they want to speak to Olof," said O'Neill.

Intentions

"It is their prerogative. I am not even sure that they have to do that but at least they have made their intentions clear. They are well within their rights to do so.

"Olof has been here seven years. He has earned the right to do this. He wants to have a wee look around and it might not be anything to do with money. It might be an environmental thing.

"If someone like Juventus have shown an interest, and within six months of your contract running out, I think you have to explore every avenue.

"I don't plague him every single day about these things. I just let him get on with it and he might come around to formulating some idea in his head of what he wants to do."

Commitment

O'Neill, though, insists that he will not stop playing Mellberg if he agrees a contract with Juventus.

"Olof's commitment has been excellent and even if he decides to go in the summer, I would have no qualms about continuing to play him or if he signed a pre-contract," O'Neill added.

"I am not going to rush him and he knows at the end of it all, he has done well enough to earn himself another contract here."

O'Neill is also hopeful he will be able to make an announcement next week regarding the future of Martin Laursen, who is also out of contract at the end of the season, after holding talks with the Danish defender.

"We had some pretty reasonably good conversations and I think I'll be able to give you some news on that by the middle of next week," O'Neill concluded.

a jinx can work for so long.

If this means making a couple of buck by signing Olof and getting some $$$ for Boumsong then it's ok.

Some sites are reporting this is a done deal already. I don´t believe it is done yet but I doubt we will not sign him.

Yeah, Laursen has been a lot better formwise than Mellberg this year, a lot better in the air, and can speak Italian, and contract running out, would have got him rather than Mellberg.

Laursen has been the best defender who doesnt play in the top 4 in the EPL imo(hope that went out right):agree:

Well Mellberg is constantly played out of position at club level. You'll need to have watched his performances as a CB, which is his natural position, for Sweden in order to make a fair assessment on his ability as a footballer.

goal.com is reporting that Mellberg has denied that he has an agreement with Juve. Now I know that is bullshit, because Mellberg wouldn't dare to turn down an opportunity like that and Secco & Co. would never turn down a free player.

Perhaps there is a big smoke screen strategy going on from the management, and that's why players like VdV and Mellberg are denying stuff to the media. Here's to hoping :pint:

Now Mellberg Denies Juventus Agreement

Rather surprisingly, Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg has denied that he reached an agreement with Juventus, contrary to what has been reported by the media in the last few weeks.

Mellberg may remain at Aston Villa after all. This was the perception that emerged from the Swedish defender's latest comments to the press regarding to his future.

"I will not comment on rumours or newspaper stories on this matter," said Mellberg, asked about a possible deal with Juventus.

In the last few days, Mellberg was spotted in Turin with some Juventus directors, and this obviously pushed forward the theory that he went to Italy to sign the deal with his future club, which he is eligible to do as his contract expires in June.

Asked about this rumoured trip, he responded: "I do not want to comment on anything at this stage.

"I must still decide whether to sign with some other club or renew with Aston Villa.

"This rumour has just as much to do with Aston Villa.

"Whether I sign for someone else or agree an extension with Villa, or whatever I may yet decide, it will become official fairly quickly but nothing has been done yet."

These latest declarations could just be a way to force Aston Villa to offer him a better deal before he eventually makes his decision.
