Juve close on Mellberg and Momo
Olof Mellberg and Momo Sissoko are ready to join Juventus this month, paid for with Tottenham’s £9m for Tiago Mendes.
According to this morning’s edition of the Gazzetta dello Sport, Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill has given the all-clear for Mellberg to be sold in the January transfer window rather than wait for June.
The Bianconeri are prepared to throw in £700,000 to have the Swede six months in advance, but no more than that.
If Villa ask for more, then Juve could drop the matter and wait until the summer when he will be out of contract.
A defender is needed immediately, as Jorge Andrade has been joined on the long-term injury list by Giorgio Chiellini, who will be out for at least a month with a knee problem.
Claudio Ranieri’s side will not be scrambling around for spare cash, as it is also suggested in today’s British newspapers that Tottenham are prepared to pay £9m for flop Tiago.
The former Chelsea midfielder has been a disaster since joining the side from Lyon in the summer and blew his last chance when Ranieri admitted he was “disappointed” in his performance in the 5-3 Coppa Italia win over Empoli midweek.
That money would immediately be reinvested in his replacement during the January transfer window, as Liverpool’s Sissoko is desperate to join the Turin giants.
It is rumoured the Reds want £10m, whereas Juve are biding their time and hope to snatch him for £7m in the final hours before the deadline.
They have already agreed a four-year contract with the player worth £1.9m per season.
