Bolton Move For Mellberg As Juve Watch

With Olof Mellberg set to move on, Bolton have joined Juventus in seeking the veteran stopper's signature...

With Olof Mellberg's Aston Villa deal set to expire this summer, there seems to be no shortage of suitors for the Swedish international defender.

A new player in the race for his signature is Bolton. The Trotters are apparently looking to steel their back line immediately - rather than waiting for a free move in summer, they would pay up to £1.5m (2m euro) for the player in order to receive his services right now.

Gary Megson has money to work with after the sale of Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea, and Mellberg is said to be high on his shopping list.

However, the Reebok men may face competition from Juventus.

Juve's interest in the player is long-standing, and reached such intensity that the player himself had to deny making a pre-contract agreement with the Turin club recently.

However, Villa boss Martin O'Neill noted that Juve had indeed made a formal approach for the player, and their interest has perhaps not cooled.

Indeed, with Chiellini recently picking up an injury, the former Racing Santander man could enter their winter transfer plans, as opposed to a Bosman move at the end of the season.

Juve have yet to publicly reveal their intentions, but Bolton's swift action could provoke them into a response.

Mellberg, 30, signed on at Villa Park in 2001. He currently captains the Birmingham outfit.

Juve offered 0.800m € to get him now but Villa prefer keeping him till June. They also have defensive problems.

Juventus are considering a move for Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg before the close of the transfer window, according to reports in the Italian press.

The Serie A giants have been interested in Mellberg for some time and Villa recently confirmed they had asked for permission to speak with the Swede.

Mellberg's current deal with Villa expires in the summer, although he has been free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club since the start of January.

However, Juve are understood to want Mellberg before the end of the season after losing Giorgio Chiellini to injury.

They would have to pay a transfer fee but Chiellini is set to be sidelined for around six weeks and Juve are desperate to bring in cover.

If Juve cannot secure Mellberg they are likely to recall a number of their young defenders from loan spells around Italy.

Juve Set To Land Mellberg & Sissoko Immediately?

Juventus could sign Olof Mellberg and Momo Sissoko during this month’s transfer window, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Bianconeri are currently going through a crisis in defence as Giorgio Chiellini is sidelined for a month, Jonathan Zebina is out for another two weeks, while Jorge Andrade is still a long way from a return.

With Alessio Secco and the transfer directors hastily agreeing to send Domenico Criscito on loan to Genoa until the end of the season, Juve have embarrassingly few options in defence, particularly in the centre-back positions.

With this in mind it seems inconceivable that Juve will nor purchase a player in this role this month and the 'Gazzetta’ says that Olof Mellberg could be this man.

The Aston Villa stopper is virtually certain to join the Old Lady in the summer on a free transfer, however the Italian-club may now try to push this deal forward immediately.

Juve are prepared to offer Villa €1m in compensation, although it remains to be seen if this will be accepted given the Swede’s likely importance to the team for the remainder of the campaign.

Another player who could arrive this month is Liverpool’s Momo Sissoko. Juve are reportedly back in pole position to sign the player and are prepared to offer in the region of €12m.

Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri is a huge admirer of Sissoko and regards him as being in the 'world-class’ category bracket.

If Ranieri considers Sissoko as a worldclassplayer, what is Van der Vaart than? If we sign Mellberg and Sissoko, I won't mind falling in a coma and wake up when we're back at worldclass-level.

I'm not sure how Sissoko could be considered world class for any reason aside from the fact that he plays for a National Team... same with Mellberg.

I wouldn't mind Mellberg as a stop gap and a Boumsong replacement... but for anything else, they're dreaming. I would not hang my hat on Andrade... he might not be the same when he returns.
