Former Juventus transfer guru Luciano Moggi has held no prisoners in his assessment of Italy’s dismal defeat to Holland, and says that Marco Materazzi, Andrea Barzagli and Rino Gattuso are all not good enough.

The Azzurri were thumped 3-0 by the Dutch in their Euro 2008 opener yesterday in a game that was characterized by some shocking defending from the Italians.

Ex-Juventus transfer expert Luciano Moggi has held no prisoners in his assessment of the game, saying that some players are just not good enough.

“Some players were underestimated, others overvalued such as Gattuso, who at this moment is not a player of national team quality,” sniped Moggi in no uncertain terms.

“Materazzi and Barzagli must not play, in the centre of defence Panucci and Chiellini must be chosen, with De Rossi in front of them.”

Roberto Donadoni controversially opted to play Materazzi despite his dreadful club season for Inter, while Massimo Ambrsosini was preferred to De Rossi in midfield.

Alen, Loew just stated that the rules were quite different when they were explained to him before the tournament. It was clear offside and the UEFA should treat it as such. It's difficult enough as it is without them changing rules DURING a tournament.

So much talk of this goal/non-goal is making me a little upset. I mean, that goal was one of three goals of the scoreline 3-0. Holland had many chances before that goal which could have easily gone in while the Azzurri were essentially being owned. That goal was always coming for the Dutch, and from the looks of the way they played, they deserved the goal. By the looks of the way both teams played, the Dutch thoroughly deserved to win.

Goal or no goal, it doesn't really matter. A 3-0 scoreline was a fair result in the scheme of things. The offside ruling is so fucked up anyway and there are many loopholes to anything.

I'm afraid you're missing the entire point. No one is saying the goal would have changed the game. Your bias against the Italians makes you think of them as crybabies, but no one has accused the referee.

What is important though is that UEFA don't change rules during the course of a tournament just to save some referee. You simply cannot do that.

IMO the Italians were downhearted to go 1-0 down having also seen replays of the goal on the big screen. Then pushing forward and conceding a 2nd which was a great goal anyway. Only until the introduction of DP, Grosso and Cassano did the Italians lift to another level, deserving 1 goal at least, then see the Dutch counter and pop in a 3rd. Sure the Dutch deserved to win but the 3-0 scoreline is unjustified.

Don't be ridiculous. This is Italy, ie. the team that always puts itself in jeopardy by playing crap in the opening and then making it after everyone has written them off. If anyone can handle being in that situation it's Italy, only the Germans are stronger mentally.

Besides, if you play football you have to deal with the occasional offside goal. Get over it.

But it's not about Italy in this case. It's about the offside rule. Which is complete nonsense as it is, but if they're going to change it whenever they feel like it, no one is able to understand it anymore.

UEFA and FIFA suck. That's the bottomline I guess.

read my posts regarding the game v holland and i admit the Dutch deserved to win.
Naturally, being Italian im not happy that a big decision went against us, as would anybody be upset when a decision goes against their team/country.

Holland ran cricles around Italy the entire match, so that goal was always coming. Don't give me this crap about Italians being "disheartened" or whatever after the first goal because it's demeaning to your own "World Champions."

You'd think that the current World Champions wouldn't get so discouraged going a goal down, but perhaps they aren't as good everyone thinks they are with their apparent weak mentality.

And yeah, only when the three subs were made Italy challenged van der Saar. That's just another fact that proves your team was being owned.

3-0 scoreline completely justified by the way Italy played and Holland dominated.
