If we did not have this interpretation of the player being off the pitch then what could happen is that the defending team could use the tactic of stepping off the pitch deliberately to play players offside, and that clearly is unacceptable. The most simple and practical interpretation of the law in this instance is the one that is adopted by referees throughout the world – that is that unless you have permission from the referee to be off the pitch, you are deemed to be on it and deemed to be part of the game

We can argue this as much as we want Seven but it's a good rule. Only this year in serie A i've seen minimum 10 similar situations where the players acted injuries just to stop a counter or they fall in their box and don't stand up just so the opponents will stop the attack.
There probably were many similar situations where defender stepped off the pitch deliberately to play players offside and that's how UEFA came up with this rule.
The referee couldn't have known if Panucci is really injured or he's acting in order to stop a dangerous Dutch attack.

Plus, we all know that if Italians scored such goal everyone would defend this rule.

That doesn't change my three objections at all, Alen.

And no, I wouldn't defend it. UEFA and FIFA both change rules during tournaments and it's insane that they always get away with it. They are two of the most corrupt and malfunctioning organisations in the world and it's the same goddamn story every time.

I hope Holland can beat the French then Italy will have a great chance of going through. Im not an Italy supporter but some of my favourite Juve players play for Italy and i want to see them do well especially Del Piero. Plus ive got a few pound on them as well :D

donadoni had very bad selection spacially playing panucci who only played one friendly match and ambrosini who never become first team player.
and playing di natali instead of del piero is another bad choice because del piero had many big games before and hes on the form of his life and the top scorer of serie a.
in details...
donadoni played with 3 center midfielders 2 of them is too defensive and not creative so in the way of his selction look like he wanted to push the fullbacks up with left and right midfielders... so lets talk about the right side, how can panucci get forward or even hold the ball to help his team mates get forward when hes 34 and cant even hold the ball for 3 seconds?
for the left side, how can zambrotta confortably go forward when di natali too attacking and never help the midfield when creating attack? so he is there just to run for long balls from counter attacks?
and choices of the center midfielders was really stupid selections did anyone notice that camoranesi was doing gattuso and ambrosini job when he was holding the ball and passing and creating spaces for his team in the center of the field?
with de rossi and pirlo italy can easily take the control on the midfield
i honestly dont know what donadoni was thinking when he put del piero, grosso and cassano out and i hope he change his mind the next match and play them because without them italy cant win spcially when playing ambrosini, gattuso and panucci even thought gattuso can perform much better when the team is balanced on the midfield.

I have read a lot of comments coming from referees association about the legitimacy of the goal.

But the 1 thing that I have not read is if anyone can be sure that the linesman actually saw that panucci was off the pitch. I do not think the linesman was aware of panucci's position, he just made a big mistake and now the rest of them are putting some spin on the situation.

I do see the point in a player cannot just go off the field injured without the referees permission as most players would be taking advantage of that.

But say that is the case and that a player injured off the field is deemed in an onside position, does it mean that if a players gets wacked on the torchline and rolls out of play and receives medical attention, can he then just come into the field without the referee's permission?

I dont think so and instead of admitting that the linesman made an error they come up with stupid rules that make no sense.

Panucci did not roll off the field, he was knocked out of the field by Buffon and it is not as if the what happened after was instant, it took a few moments and by the time the ball came to RVD, he was offside, no doubt.

Anyways I have made my feelings clear towards Donadoni elsewhere so I wont waste time on him. I did not see the teams come out as I was fuming when i found out that Ambrosini was starting but my fury turned to utter dismay and astonishment when I thought I saw Ambrosini with the captain's armband until I noticed that materazzi had the same blue arm band too.

Against Holland I would like to see a complete overhaul of the side with Buffon, Zambrotta, Chiellini, Gamberini, Grosso, De Rossi, Pirlo, Aquilani, Perrotta, Dp and Toni.

Toni was just too isolated last night, no matter how fashionable it is to blame him. It is not that Di Natale is a bad player, it is just that Dp and Cassano are better choices.

Camo was bad last night, no matter how much spin there is on this forum and I would rather perotta as he has running energy that Italian players do not just have.

Camoranesi , Di Natale and Cassano can come on if need be or gattusso depending on the way the game is going but panucci, Materazzi and Ambrossini should not be allowed to sit on the bench even as the possibility of them coming on should even be an issue.

2 wins from their last 2 matches is not something that this team can do, I am afraid as even though France have a donkey as well as their manager, are very difficult to score against and the 1 thing this Italian side is not blessed with is pace and France find such teams easier to deal with.

But Eazy, the Azzurri are not particularly suited to play the straight 4-4-2. Di Natale is not a left-winger, rather he is a left-forward who is not exactly a winger. Perhaps it wouldn't matter if he plays there at left-wing, but we also have to remember that Grosso will always be up the flank, so is Di Natale suited enough to cover for him? Italy, under Donadoni, has usually played with either a 4-3-3 or some sort of hybrid of that. So they are not necessarily used to that sort of direct formation.

Moreover, the midfield might be stretched because Pirlo himself roams around all over the place, hence why every time he plays he has Gattuso and either Ambrosini or Emerson next to him at Milan. Pirlo's influence could be hampered in the straight 4-4-2 because he will be forced to stay in position and not have as much freedom.

Pirlo is the key to the midfield, so I don't know if one would want to limit his freedom.
Of course they aren't used to it (except the Juve boys), but the Azzuri certainly showed how the 4-3-3 can be burned by good ball movement. In addition they looked very uncomfortable in their respective positions. In 2006 Italy had the legs to play 4-3-3 and its obvious they lack that now. My only point is that it's easier to put your two best center mids out there with players you know will succeed (ie. Camo, Grosso, Del Piero) rather than scramble to find the best 3 man combination up top and in the middle after a night of failure.

Grosso and Di Natale/Del Piero pushing up the left flank may be enough to do the trick even if Donadoni decides to stay in his 4-3-3 so long as he keeps Zambro off the pitch or tells him to stay home on defense so there are 3 defenders back at all times. Hopefully that will limit the countering ability of the Romanians who have decent speed.

Apparently, Donadoni said the formation he out there last night was "the right one"

And that you can't say the choices he made was bad because the game was over.

Pirlo said that Del Piero and De Rossi should have started as well.
