Yea I'm heartbroken about this as well, but let's face it, we didn't concede a real goal in 06. We can concede a couple of goals this time and still win it, Toni just has to be in his usual form and all will be fine.

Canna's Euro chances fade
Monday 2 June, 2008

Early indications are that Fabio Cannavaro will miss Euro 2008 and will be replaced by Fiorentina’s Alessandro Gamberini.

Disaster struck during Italy’s first pre-tournament training session in Austria when skipper Canna remained grounded after a 50-50 with Giorgio Chiellini during a mini-game.

Fears grew as an obviously distressed Cannavaro had to be carried off Admira Wacker’s ground on a stretcher.

While it will take two days to ascertain the exact extent of the problem, reports from the hospital are grim.

It is being suggested that Cannavaro has seriously damaged his left ankle and may even require surgery.

If that is the case, Italy will have to face Euro 2008 without their captain and will look for a replacement.

After a superb campaign with Fiorentina, Gamberini was disappointed not to have made Roberto Donadoni’s squad for the tournament, but he may now get his chance.

This is a huge blow imo.

Do you even watched Gamberini on the pitch despite the two Juventus games?

I am not writing Italy off yet,I believe the spirit of the group is even higher now after Cannavaro is out.
You think their spirit went up after losing their captain? I doubt it.

Cannavaro isn't just a leader he's a defensive organizer. I don't trust Barzagli or Materazzi to fill his boots.

Of course he is their leader and organizer, but they might want to prove that they can win the Euro's nonetheless. We'll see...

I sincerely hope neither Barzagli or Materazzi are called to be starters regardless.

I also think Italy might adopt a "do it for the gipper" attitude, and dedicate their Euro Cup run on their captain.

If Donadoni goes with a Barzagli/Materazzi duo... Italy is not likely to escape their group, and will be shortly looking for a new coach. Time to give guys like Chiellini and Gamberini a chance to shine.

I agree with Thunderball, Chiellini has had a far better season than either Matrix or Barzagli had. In addition, Barzagli has little international experience whereas Chiellini basically grew up in the CL with Juve.

This is actualy a big loss for Italy. Canavaro is one of the most important players in this team. I guess Gigi or Ale will be the captain for the euro

Cannavaro may not be the same player as he was in 2006, but only at club level. For Italy, he is still a force. This is a massive loss. He is our leader at the back. Luckily Buffon can take over, but I doubt to the same effect.
