Zambro may miss Scotland

There are fears that Barcelona’s Gianluca Zambrotta could miss the Azzurri’s crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Scotland.

Italy need to take a point in Glasgow on November 17 to book a place in Austria and Switzerland next year.

Roberto Donadoni’s men may have their backs to the wall at Hampden Park, but their defence could be weakened if ex-Juve wing-back Zambrotta’s injury is as serious as feared.

The 30-year-old isn’t in the squad for Barcelona’s tie with Rangers today after suffering suspected ligament damage in his right ankle.

More will be known regarding the extent of the injury when the test results are revealed later in the week.

please donadoni, don't play grosso instead of chiellini.
I think he would be smart to play both Grosso and Chiellini because Zambrotta is probably not going to be fit for Scotland and Oddo has been terrible this season.
Although i have not seen Grosso play for Lyon this season he was impressive agaisnt
Georgia(which doesn't really say much i guess) and i think he should play RB while Chiellini covers LB. I think for central defence we will see Cannavaro and Barzagli because Matterazi has only just recovered and i don't think hes ready yet for a do or die qualifier.

^ Don't you think it's risky to play Grosso in RB ? As far as i know he's a typical left back/wingback. He never played on the right side in his life and this match is too important to make such an experiment.

I doubt Donadoni will take any risks. He'll use Oddo as RB (He's been out for two weeks but expected to be completely ready for Scotland) , Canna and Barzagli as CB's and one of Grosso/Chiellini for LB, most probably Grosso.
I also expect him to use 2 DMC's. One of them will for sure be Gattuso, while the other one will be one of Ambrosini/De Rossi.

In a match where a point takes Italy to EURO 2008, you can expect nothing but a defensive formation from an Italian coach.

The last time they played and Italy completely outplayed the Scotts, Donadoni was using 4-3-3 with Camoranesi and Di Natale on the wings and Toni in the center. Something like that may work again because back then Scotland had no clue how to stop the offensive trio.

Since there is not a Azzurri thread anymore, I will post it here. Gattuso just had a baby boy last night, Francesco!

Hey Jack -- hope you don't mind. Reopened the "Official Azzurri Euro 2008 Qualifier" thread, since any insults and discussions were now clogging up the all-nations "Official Euro 2008 Qualifier Thread" by default anyway.

(And the reason I separated the threads was so that all-Italy-all-the-time could have its own home separate from the other nations.)

He deserves a place ahead of Toni when it comes to form alteast. But yeah, the chances of him being called up are slim.If Vieri ends up scoring 15+ goals this season, which i have a feeling he will, then i think Donadoni might call him up for the Euro Finals.

I wouldn't go as far as to say he deserves a place ahead of Toni. I would say he is behind Toni. I watch Fiorentina and I must say that Vieri cannot play a whole game. He is playing well but I still think he is only good as a super sub. He might score 15 goals I don't know about plus. I am not opposed to a Vieri return I just don't see him being better than Toni.

If matrix isn't ready, I'd start chiellni at cb along with canna. Chiellni has proven to be better than barzagli or any other cb's available at this time.

    I'd play this:

    ................Zambo...............Canna..............Barzaglie................Grosso/Chiellini

    ..........................................................Pirlo...................................................
    ....................................Gatusso.........................De Rossi/Perotta..................

    ...................................Camo......................................................................
    ..................................................................Iaquinta/Di Natale....................
    ..........................................................Toni.................................................

Yea sure, it was to be opened again. Let's hope it stays on topic this time.
thank you. this is my favorite thread.
btw I would start something like this

    ------------------Buffon
    Oddo------Canna---Chiellini-----grosso

    -------De rossi------Pirlo-----Gattusso

    ---------------------Rosina

    ------------Di natale------Toni

I predict a 1-1 draw or a 1-0 win for Italy. Sorry to juve red but i just can't see a Scotland win.
