The defence crumbled soon as Materazzi came off.. his partnership with Cannavaro is vital.. i know ill cop some shit for saying this but i hope his injury wasnt something too serious so he can play against the French.
:agree: Exactly.

Bad news

Materazzi out until 2008?

Fears over Azzurri defender Marco Materazzi are growing with reports that he may be sidelined until the New Year.

Materazzi was stretchered off in Wednesday night’s friendly against Hungary after an opposition player fell on top of him.

The severity of the injury didn’t become clear until the 34-year-old lost consciousness and began vomitting on the sidelines.

The main problem is a ruptured vein in his thigh muscle which has occurred as a result of internal bleeding following a serious trauma.

While initial reports suggested that the ex-Perugia man may be out for around three weeks, it now seems that he faces a much longer road to recovery.

“It’s tough to give a good diagnosis at this stage, but we hope to get him back before 2008,” Azzurri doctor Andrea Ferretti revealed. “Maybe his return will be a Christmas present.”

Materazzi’s injury is yet another headache for troubled Italy boss Roberto Donadoni who saw his side mauled 3-1 in Budapest.

Say what you will of Domenech or the French FA but it was a very good idea to play 2 different teams in 2 days so as to get everybody minutes to play.

It is one of the more innovative things I have seen in years to give fitness to all your players.

Donadoni has done a decent job so far with the silly help he has got from the Italian FA

I dont always agree with some of the players he picks but I don't know what you guys expect from players that have not started the season and are probbaly more interested in the big kick off rather than this match.

At the very highest level Dp cannot perform for 90 minutes on a regular basis, the sooner you guys realise that, the better it would be for you

I cant wait for the Italia vs France.

That will be most competitive match after the WC Final IMO, well bar Copa America Final, but you know Brasil told Argentina that who are the daddy. And I can't wait to see Nasri playing against Italian defence. I thought he and Ribery were terrific against Ukraine. But playing Azzurri in a competitive match is like playing on different planet compared to Ukraine. And lastly, I think Italians should attack from the word go. This team going forward is as good as any.

I am not a big fan of Donadoni, I really don't think he has the experience to run the world champions yet. Italy looks so weak with him in charge.

:agree: Compared to Lippi - definitely! Give him a hand Marcello! I want Italy to stuff France just to shut that muppet domenech up.

Marcello Lippi could be in line to return as coach of the Italian national team unless Roberto Donadoni can recover from the demoralising midweek defeat against Hungary.

The 59-year-old is preparing to begin work as a pundit on Italian television for the new Serie A campaign, but has inserted a clause in that deal just in case.

If a big coaching job comes up, then Lippi will be free to return to the game and reports have suggested that the biggest post of all could be his again.

"I’m a coach who is on loan to a TV company,” he explained. “I accepted this job so that I could keep up with the game.”

Donadoni is coming under increasing pressure as the world champions have stuttered under his management and the 3-1 reverse against Hungary have only increased that.

Rumours are now circulating that if the Italains do not perform in the Euro 2008 qualifier against France next month then Lippi could be asked to step back in.

He resigned as coach last summer after winning the World Cup with the Azzurri, claiming that he wanted to take a break.

Italy call for Nesta comeback Friday 24 August, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With Marco Materazzi and Fabio Cannavaro injured, will Italy convince Alessandro Nesta to come out of international retirement?

The Azzurri are facing a crisis ahead of the most important game in Coach Roberto Donadoni’s career so far, the September 8 Euro 2008 qualifier against France at San Siro.

Materazzi is certainly ruled out after suffering a freak thigh injury during Wednesday’s 3-1 friendly in Hungary that almost ended his career.

Now captain Cannavaro is also in doubt, as he picked up a nasty knock during training with Real Madrid and has been left with a suspected sprained ankle.

The situation in defence is increasingly tense and the alternatives for the central roles are lacking in international experience for such a crucial match.

With this in mind, a newspaper campaign is mounting to bring Nesta back into the Italy fold, even if only for September’s qualifiers with France and Ukraine.

The Milan man retired from international duty this month, stating he was no longer physically able to sustain all his club and Azzurri commitments following a series of injuries.

However, it is still possible he could be coaxed back for just two decisive games in their hour of need.

It would be an intriguing exchange, as Materazzi was the man who stepped in during the 2006 World Cup when Nesta was injured – proving to be one of the leaders in that tournament.

Retiring at age 31, Nesta notched up 78 senior caps for his country, making his debut in a 3-1 victory away to Moldova on October 5, 1996.

I hope he returns for at least the next two important games,we don't have any other great CB back-ups.Or am I wrong?I've only Barzagli in my mind...and he isn't great either.

Lippi won;t be back, he won world cup already...if he only won euro cup, i am sure he will stay on to have a shot at the wc..now he got the biggest prize in football, i dun think he would wanna come back and put his legancy at stack..

The Italian press are still up in arms over the Azzurri’s 3-1 loss in a friendly away to Hungary, with some sections of the media even claiming that World Cup winning coach Marcello Lippi is line for a sensational return at the expense of Roberto Donadoni.

Italian football federation president Giancarlo Abete has been quick to put an end to those rumours while urging the press to take things in perspective.

"The reports are off the mark,” insisted the FIGC boss. “Don't forget that in five competitive matches the national team has obtained five wins despite a difficult start."

Italy have two massively important Euro qualifiers against France and Ukraine in store for early September, but their preparations have been hampered by the retirements of Totti and Nesta as well as the serious injury suffered by Materazzi during the Hungary debacle.
