i have to say the azzurri were very unlucky. we are probably in the most difficult qualifying group and with a retard for a coach and a post world cup hangover our chances of qualifying were always hurt. btw if we lose we arent out we are just in the same spot we were in after we lost to france last year. no matter how much we get slammed by france we will still qualify if we win all of our other games. yet with away trips to scotland and ukraine it is a tall order.

France coach Raymond Domenech has been suspended for one match after being found in breach of UEFA's disciplinary regulations.
Domenech has been handed one touchline ban for his side's UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifier against Italy on 8 September as well as being fined CHF10,000 (€6,000) for bringing football into disrepute. Domenech has three days to appeal the UEFA Control and Disciplinary board decision which comes following inappropriate remarks made in an interview to the French newspaper Le Parisien.

Although the match will be highly competitive, I think the match will end up in a draw. If Italia draw, then they have a trip to Scotland and Ukraine, with both teams having to play France. Which basically means, they probably only need to get a draw in those two matches, or one victory and one loss, which to be fair, shouldnt be too hard for the Italians. They are well capable of doing that. Alternatively, if France was to the match, they themselves will be shitting in pants with literally knock-out stage matches against Scotland and Ukraine. Two teams got too much to loose by trying to win the match. I see dull 0-0 draw with feisty challenges coming in midfield and defence. But it will defintely be competitive, and worth the watch IMO.

Panucci set for Azzurri recall? Saturday 1 September, 2007

Christian Panucci could be recalled to the Italy squad against France, but he faces stiff competition from Giorgio Chiellini.
The Roma defender has not played for his country since a 2-1 win over Bulgaria on June 22, 2004, despite going from strength to strength at club level.
The fiery 34-year-old had a blazing row with Marcello Lippi when they were at Inter and the resentment remains to this day, ruining his chances of taking part in the World Cup winning adventure.
With Marco Materazzi out injured for at least two months, the newspapers are suggesting new boss Roberto Donadoni could give Panucci another chance.
Experience is sorely needed at the back against France on September 8 and Ukraine on the 11th after Alessandro Nesta confirmed his international retirement.
However, the 'Gazzetta dello Sport’ also claims that the main rival for Panucci’s role is Under-21 international Chiellini.
The subject of an £8m offer from Manchester City this summer, the Juventus man may be ready for the leap into the senior squad.
He already has six caps to his name, although the most recent was in the 2-0 friendly defeat to Croatia on August 16, 2006 – Donadoni’s first match.
Chiellini captained the Under-21 side in the recent European Championships and is receiving regular first team appearances for Juve.
Donadoni is set to announce his squad after the Sunday afternoon Serie A matches.
It is rumoured among the media in Italy that the squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers will be among these names:
Goalkeepers: Buffon, Amelia, Curci.
Defenders: Oddo, Barzagli, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Zaccardo, Chiellini, Grosso, Gamberini, Tonetto.
Midfielders: Gattuso, Pirlo, De Rossi, Ambrosini, Perrotta, Aquilani, Diana, Camoranesi.
Forwards: Toni, Inzaghi, Quagliarella, Del Piero, Di Natale, Rocchi, Iaquinta, Lucarelli, Gilardino.

I wouldn't want to be Donadoni right now...problems from front to back! But if I was him...
Obviously Buffon in goal, & since Grosso's form is debatable, Oddo for RB. Better than Panucci even if not as good as on form Grosso! Barzagli & Chiellini for CB's because I wouldn't risk Cannavaro after the Hungarian disaster, & certainly not Zaccardo. And this takes into account that I know Chiellini is far better at LB than CB...I figure we're not any worse off going with this set up! Luca Zambrotta is LB!
I'd risk Camoranesi on the right wing just for the 1'st half as he's still not 100% & the Milanisti Gattuso, & Pirlo as CMF with Ambrosini on the left. Diana subbing Camo for the 2'nd 45. Up front I'm risking Toni & Di Natale with Pippo Inzaghi subbing Toni if he's not cutting it.
Quagliarella I'd bring on as a 3'rd attacker to go for broke if necessary for the last 25, something Donadoni would never do! I'd have to make up my mind if Barzagli or Chiellini came off...
A suicide squad perhaps, with attacks coming from both sides & centre but at least my team would try to hit the French where it hurt & they wouldn't pussyfoot about playing containment games!
