Before I answer this Vinny, I just want to say that my opinions on this are not terribly well informed, so please forgive any inanity. :)

You think were trained to shoot first, and ask questions later ???
No. I imagine that the training received by American police officers is truely top notch. However, I think carrying a gun impacts the mentality of at least some officers. I have seen the odd case of truely stupid quantities of amunition being pumped into a vehicle carrying an unarmed petty thief. That seems to me to be a bit thick, but I accept that there are likely to be dumbasses in any sufficiently large group of people (who can't be judged on the actions of the dumbasses), and also that even very smart, well-trained people make errors of judgement.

Oh, that makes a ton of sense... warning shots

Dont those "warning shots" have to end up hitting somethimg ??

Hopefully, not the innocent bystander a few blocks away
Presumably their system is working - so it can't be as bad as that.

EDIT: Erik mentioned blanks. I don't know about that - if your first shot is a blank... "I know what you're thinking: 'Did he fire that gun yet?' Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?" ;) I'm sure they've got a sensible system though.

A shot that wont kill ??? Go ahead and aim for their leg or arm , and see if you dont accidentally hit them in the head, or midsection, and kill them

If we shoot, it is to kill. There is no other way
Would depend on the time you've got, right? Surely, given time to take aim, and decent shot can shoot to maim. Obviously, there are going to be plenty of situations where that won't work, but when it will...

Yes it is; that's the whole point. These systems are adapted to the moral of the society they're part of. So neither system is worse or better than the other; just different.

The first shot is always a blank; part of protocol in how a Dutch police officer must load his gun. I suppose it's more about intent to kill. Which is a vague area, legally speaking, I am aware. I'm not an expert on the matter; all I know is that if a police officer in this country kills someone - he will be suspended and an investigation will follow.

I'm sure it wouldn't work in your culture. But you'd be wise not to judge other cultures by your own standards. Our society doesn't work the same way yours does; we have different norms and values so instead of laughing at a foreign system, at least show some respect and inform yourself before you pass any form of judgement.
first shot a blank ??

Might as well just commit suicide......that would NEVER work here

The officer gets suspended if he kills someone ??

WHAT IF HE'S JUSTIFIED ?????

it must be nice to know that if you do your job properly in Holland, you will either end up dead or fired

If it's justified; then it will be established within the day and he won't even have to actually leave work for his suspension. It's just a rule we have to secure some things. I know 'suspension' sounds very serious but that's not necessarily the case.

Our society is very different, don't forget that.

The officer gets suspended if he kills someone ??
I think thats fairly common...

Our armed police are suspended (more sent home) for the duration of the enquiry if they even discharge their weapon let alone kill someone...

Personally i completely agree with that train of events

Just kidding really, but I've been asking you for 2 days: dont you get to carry automatic weapons in your car after that bank robbery in LA in 94 or 95?
sorry about that...

I'm usually pressed for time, so I zip through 15-20 pages of this thread in a few minutes.........

no automatic weapons in the cars...

if a situation arises where we need some heavy-duty weapondry, it is brought in from the station pretty quickly

they are also used during drug raids

some guy pulled a gun on me at Wendy's and put it in my face. He said my friend and I cut him off but we didnt. He tried to go right on a red light onto our road when we had a green light. I guess he didnt see us til he was up our ass. Anyway he said he was a cop and he should blow my brains out because he had kids in the car. I was like your setting a wonderful example buddy. He cursed and pointed it closer and I apologized and then he left.

Oh my god,Im so fckin happy that I live in europe...here,almost nobody shoots at cops. Reasons? No prison if they catch you....you know that you're dead :)

That brings benefits for everyone. You can go into encounters by fists with cops, they will rather accept the fistfight than shoot you.....which is cool if you ask me :D
