Paul, Northern Ireland the current British champions??? They couldn't be champions of, well, Northern Ireland. Hahaha.
They are actually... reigning british champions

Go make WHINE out of those sour grapes. So what, England has never lived up to it's potential as a footballing nation? Neither has Spain, or Italy for that matter. Please, you don't have to defend England - it's not your fault, and nobody should make a big deal about it.
Sometimes we are forced to defend ourselves... but yes its pointless... and yes i comnpletely agree that england , spain and italy have all failed to live upto their potential

Are Spain and England missed when it comes to World Cups? I sure think so. Whereas they might not have as many titles as Brazil, Italy or Germany, they still are right up there with the biggest football nations of today.

Let's be fair, it's just not a real World Cup when Spain isn't there to underperform. And can you imagine a World Cup without huge media shows about England's current star? I didn't think so.

ATM England have a very decent team. Whether you like it or not, they do have a chance of winning.

Oh and guess what, not every team has won the World Cup three times. It's a huge achievement in fact. So if you have to have won three World Cups to deserve in finals, those finals aren't going to be a very long affair.

And I don't want San Marino, Liechtenstein or Andorra in the World Cup. Big clashes are what makes the World Cup interesting. So do I want to see Spain battling England rather than Northern Ireland playing against Bosnia? I do.

My sentiments exactly.. its just people (Im guitly of it myself) just like to see big guns fall down.. its the same as the CL, who would want all the little teams knocking out the big ones in the qualifiers.. that would be really lame.

I would. Except for us, of course ;)

England never was ... to not see Italy as a super power because of a few 'misses' is complete bulsh*t because by that rationale Cameroon shoudl be a greater threat than England. England has done sweet f*ck all in these touraments despite some big names.
There is a difference with the Italy reaction Paul...People love to see them fail but that is a whole other issue. Fact of the matter is that people watch teams like Brazil, Italy and France while the chokers are never expected to do much which explains the lack of care media, etc. has for them.

How you can look at Italy's international record in the past 15 years and say they are not a power is beyond me.

For the record, I would miss England..as I said in my opening post on this issue.

Don't know about that..for some Cameroon-Argentina in 90...South Korea-Italy and then Spain are what really make those tournaments memorable..the fact that ALL TEAMS start on equal footing and anything can happen.

I really dont see a big difference in england / italy's results in the last 15 years... pretty similar to me... neither very good...

Last 15 years in world cup :

    England Italy

England - italy played off for 3rd place... italy edging an anyone could of won match

ENgland Didnt qualify... Italy lost in final

England lost in last 16... Italy lost in quarter

England lost in quarters... Italy lost in last 16

Last 15 years in euros :

England failed to pass group... Italy failed to qualify

England lost in semi final... Italy failed to pass the group

England failed to pass group... Italy lost in final

England lost in quarters... Italy failed to pass group

Factor in the teams we lost too and where they finnished and the difference is very little indeed

Assuming you are taking england as a choker as you imply... How do you reach the lack of media care statement...

Bear in mind that england games feature in virtually all of the most watched (worldwide audience) of international football matches... (look it up)

The worldwide column inches spent on england... Which supasses pretty much everyone else

Lack of media care... my arse

Also your statement implies italy etc get far more media attention yet the likes of the 94 final is the biggest audience failure in televised world cup history

Although part of that is that the old BE (I mean no disrepect by the "old"part ) all spoke English (obviously). Every other country had their own language.

At least this was true before the Net---all teams have been internationalized a bit by it. (see forums, Juventuz.com) :)

There are more column inches spent on English teams, because there are more papers in English. :)

ESPN here in California carries English soccer (and Mexican soccer on the Spanish station, for example), but little Italian soccer.

BTW, I was in no way bashing England or the BE. I am a major Anglophile. :)

Oh sorry i thought we were gonna have a discussion about the media... obviously not...

If you had known the answers to the questions i asked of you you would know that your statement is irrelevant...

I also ask amongst the other questions that actually resolve this issue in themselves... How much of the world media do you read...

For instance can you tell me how much space is taken up in the Italian news and media everyday in regards to english football ? Do you read the likes of gazzetta , la repubblica, la stampa, corriere dela sera, corriere della sport... do you watch rai etc ....

What other world media do you actually read / view on a regular basis ?

I don't know about the other ones, but I believe fairly little is said about english football in la gazzetta, which bugs me every time we're in Italy.

The English a bit. The Italian a bit more. A bit of the Mexican papers.

The non-English ones I read (admittedly, I don't read every newspaper in the world) couldn't give a fig about English footie.

Lol... Not unpleasant... just a question... You aim a point to me in a way that suggests you know the workings of the media... Then im gonna ask...

If you question me about the area i have worked in , in various countries throughout the world for the last 17 years I would expect you to be able to back it up and answer the simple things i asked of you

    Anyway... subject closed

    :D

I'm not in the least bit offended, BTW.

Put it down to my misunderstanding your question, then.

    Forza Juve :)
