I really fail to see how setting up the winning goal in a WC final makes Scirea better. The same goes for his WC record for that matter. But if we want to examine it, it turns out that Baresi has in fact an even more impressive record, strictly from a defender's point of view at least.
Baresi presided the defence of the team that set the all-time record of most successive WC games without conceding a goal : 5 games in WC 1990. Considering it's mostly offensive players that score the goals which make you win the game, I'd say this is the most impressive achievement a defender can reach on the international stage.

Counts for personal glory and not ranking defenders side by side...to me there is no ifs and or buts..thats the way I see it. A player that makes his Serie A debut at 16 and National Team debut at 18 and goes on to create what is considered the greatest D in the World AND is constantly on the lips of Golden Ball voters even at 37 years old is on a whole different level than Scirea plainly never had the same talent as Maldini
Well Emmanuel Small handled the pressure pretty well in that glorious summer night of 1998 in Paris. Heck he even scored the goal that killed the game. Would you say this earns him a seat next to Giresse or Tigana in the Pantheon of French midfielders?
Now besides the missed penalty, have you actually seen Baresi's game in the WC 1994 final?
And which was the most decisive in each team's successes/progressing throughout the tournament? Scirea's defence in 82 or Baresi's in 94 (or at least for the little he played) and especially in 1990?

Its a TEAM there were many players on the squad ... if you knew your history you would know that Baresi was injured for most of WC 94 AND more importantly, A GOAL WAS NOT SCORED IN THE FINAL BY THE OPPOSITION when he did play. SEE, there was nothing more Baresi could do even if someone is to take your 'keystone cops' rationale with two grains of salt.
Re-watch WC 94 and watch Baresi's performance AND he came off a 6 game injury AND he faced a much more talented (offensive wise) Brazilian squad who could not get past the KAISER for 120 minutes.
