While SF's North Beach is on Nick's Little Italy list, it too has succumbed to suburban flight and encroachment by other ethnicities in the area... such as Chinatown. So I, like Nick, am finding fewer and fewer Italian enclaves in this country where you can say "buona sera" and someone has a clue.

Chicago's Little Italy lost a lot in the past 20 years. Boston's North End is slowly aging itself out. Etc...

In fact, most of the Italian-run outfits I know in SF need to be fluent in Spanish because of the labor force.
Well, I guess my expectations for North Beach were low but I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, Steps of Rome a tad tacky but the Tiramisu was decent, espresso received a passing grade for North American espresso and most importantly the waiters were Italian...not Gino Trans-Am 'my Fadder owns dis joint' Italian but actual "ehhh escus-a mee...would-a you like-a some Vino..uhh wine." and they were honest with me after I spoke to them in Italian..they told me which selected plates were decent.
Caffe Greco was also trying to hard but the fact I could get the Gazzetta and speak to the barista in Italian .. it got a passing grade.
Trieste was a bit of a disappointment...the "Burke-like"/Asthon Kutcher barista behind the counter looked at me like a deer caught in the headlights when I stated "CORTO PER PIACERE" when ordering an espresso.

Nevertheless, compared to NYC, Chicago and San Diego ... it passes with flying colors...does not compare to Toronto or Montreal which is up there because Italians arrived in Canada much later than most U.S. Cities thus there is still some old-school establishments opened by immigrants in the 70's.

Most of them were likely over-extracted horse dung. The Bay Area is notoriously (or at least surprisingly) weak for espresso, with a few very notable exceptions. (Of course, I was shocked when I was in NYC a few months back and found them to be far, far worse than SF on average, but...)

    So lay them on! :D
Believe it or not...my second visit to Trieste minus the Burke-ster Barista proved to be the best espresso in the bay area...a bit THICK and grainy but very passable.

    your name is Kevin.
You have dined at the OLIVE Garden in the past.
You are familiar with Mama Leoni's.

Aren't we all Wonder Bread Wops?

Seriously. We are . . . as much as we try to deny it.

Oh come on Pado, why do you hate Olive Garden? They have some pretty decent food down there. :frown: ;)
No, the food is disgusting shit.

However, if you only have the salad, you've done well. 17 years ago the salad was quite good.

Very nice goal by Pirlo. Very smart pass by Del Piero, and good finishing by Gila.

Nick, its good to have you back my friend.

If you people want great Italian food, come up to Rhode Island and dine in one of the many fine establishments on Federal Hill.

    Excellent quality.

Much respect to Milan for loaning Abbiati to Juve. They certainly didn't have to do that. As much as people here hate that squad, they are, and always will be, a first class orginization that knows how to treat its players well, and play football the right way.

And as far as Balzaretti from Torino that Juve got for free. Man, oh man, that was a steal. This kid is a player.

Great move on Moggi's part. Most Excellent

I tried to tone down your expectations after having come over from Roma, afterall. ;)

I do love the fact I can read La Gazzettta there. It's a favorite pastime.

Trieste was a bit of a disappointment...the "Burke-like"/Asthon Kutcher barista behind the counter looked at me like a deer caught in the headlights when I stated "CORTO PER PIACERE" when ordering an espresso.
 And you correctly ordered an espresso in the manner all U.S. cafes should serve them: short!

Reading through this thread today, though ... it's defintely good to have you back, Nick. Time to reanimate the patient. ;)

Thanks..by the way Greg...I figured I would bump into you at CityLights or maybe in some non-touristy winery like Clos Pegase (?) but all I saw was some kid with a Liverpool jersey who I slapped with my leather glove.
