The point of the story wasn't mixing up a Mexican (as opposed to Mexi-can't) with an Italian...the point was that when I sit in a restaurant like Mela or Luna or MAMA whatever I assume people will speak Italian or at least know what "Buona sera" means....
there is very little Italian left in these restaurants besides the name.
While SF's North Beach is on Nick's Little Italy list, it too has succumbed to suburban flight and encroachment by other ethnicities in the area... such as Chinatown. So I, like Nick, am finding fewer and fewer Italian enclaves in this country where you can say "buona sera" and someone has a clue.
Chicago's Little Italy lost a lot in the past 20 years. Boston's North End is slowly aging itself out. Etc...
In fact, most of the Italian-run outfits I know in SF need to be fluent in Spanish because of the labor force.
Greg: I tried a good variety of espresso in the Bay Area...ready for my comments...
Most of them were likely over-extracted horse dung. The Bay Area is notoriously (or at least surprisingly) weak for espresso, with a few very notable exceptions. (Of course, I was shocked when I was in NYC a few months back and found them to be far, far worse than SF on average, but...)
So lay them on!
