Here is some not too good news.......

I went to the game last night (Italy- Serbia), and while I was there I ran into 2 of the "Soccer fanatics" (if you have TLN and live in Canada, then you know who these guys are), my good friend went to school with them.

After a few minutes of telling them that they need a Juventini on their show (and that I was available if they needed me !!:D) I asked them about the rumors for next season- if Sky was really going to throw everyone in North America under the bus.

They said they dont know whats going to happen, but it aint lookin' so good :down::down::down:

Its funny, but so many ppl were giving them shit.... I almost felt bad for them !!

The thing that struck me as weird was I saw them there, and also Alf DeBlasis, the commentator for TLN. They were all sitting in the 200 section (second level) where I was sitting.

There were TLN signs all over the Skydome, they must have been one of the big sponsors, and all the TLN tv ppl got was the second level ???

You would think that they'd get first row seats , or something....

The attendance for the game was a measly 22,000

Next time they better bring DP, Totti and Vieri if they wanna sell the place out

Can't you get your hands on a satellite receiver so you can catch some Italian pay channels? You'll have to find an Italian resident to buy the keycard for you though but that's do-able I would think.

Yet it only got to 3-0? Sounds like Holland versus some European mini-state:

Van Basten: "Come on fellas, 3 goals up, let's go for a monsterscore!"
Van Nistelrooy: "Ugh, can't be bothered..."

:D

Liverpool will be allowed to defend their Champions League crown next season.

UEFA's 14-man executive committee today decided to make a special case to allow the Reds into the first qualifying round of the competition next season.

It means Liverpool will have to play six matches in order to qualify for the group phase and it could interfere with their pre-season tour of Japan.

Liverpool, who failed to finish in a qualifying place in the Barclays Premiership, will become the fifth English side in the competition.

UEFA have also taken steps to ensure that the same scenario never occurs again by changing the rules so that in the future the titleholders will always qualify for the competition the following season.

If the Liverpool situation occurs again and the European champions fail to finish in a qualifying place in their domestic competition however they will come in at the expense of the fourth-placed side.

The rules will also apply for countries who only get three or two Champions League spots, but there will be a special exemption in the unlikely event of a country with one Champion League spot winning the competition but failing to win their own domestic league.

UEFA said in a statement: 'Liverpool FC will compete in next season's UEFA Champions League first qualifying round.

'The UEFA Executive Committee decided to amend the regulations for the future editions of the Champions League, so that the holders will have the right to defend their title and therefore qualify automatically. At the same time, the number of clubs allowed per national association will remain stable based on coefficient ranking.

'Exceptionally, for the upcoming season, the executive committee today decided to allow the current Champions League holders to defend their title.'

The UEFA executive committee also decided that:

# Liverpool would enter the competition in the first qualifying round, to be played on 12/13 and 19/20 July, with the draw taking place on 24 June.

# There will be no country protection for Liverpool.

# Liverpool will be included in the English market pool share with the status of lowest-placed English club.'

UEFA spokesman William Gaillard admitted that splitting the pot of money five rather than four ways will be 'a burden on the other English-based clubs'.

There was further disappointment for Manchester City, who will not take Liverpool's place in the UEFA Cup.

Gaillard described the verdicts on Liverpool and Manchester City as a 'consensus position'.

'The executive committee decided this was the best solution possible,' he told Sky Sports.

'They felt that this was the best and wisest decision.'

Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson said the verdict was a 'great decision for football'.

'We've had the right things in our hearts and they've had the right things in their minds,' he told Sky Sports.

'This is a great decision for football. I'm glad they've made the decision quickly and to our benefit.'

With Liverpool having to play all three qualifying rounds, Rafael Benitez's side will have a busy summer.

Thompson added: 'I suppose that's a downside but Liverpool wanted to defend the title, and if that has to be the case then so be it.'

Thompson also admitted he would have been happy for Liverpool to be excluded from the pool of TV revenue.

'It's always been about qualifying and defending your trophy,' he said.

'It'll be great for Liverpool but it wouldn't have bothered me if Chelsea, Manchester United and even dear old Everton had shared the money.'

UEFA chief executive Lars-Christer Olsson said there was no question of Liverpool being allowed a pass into the third qualifying round, only whether the rules would be changed to admit them to the competition at the earliest stage.

And he confirmed that there had been no votes against the move.

'It was a unanimous decision,' he told BBC Five Live.

'There are always discussions but when it comes to the decision there is always a unanimous decision.'

Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann, yesterday awarded a new contract by the club, was thrilled by the change.

'It's tremendous news for the club,' said the Germany international, who shrugged off concerns that the club would have to cancel its tour of Japan.

'We're delighted to be in there and if we have to change something then we will do so.

'We start pre-season on June 27 and we've got two or three weeks to get us into physical shape for the first round.

'We'll do our best. We've got to go through he qualifying rounds and we'll do our best to defend the trophy.'

FA chairman and UEFA vice-president Geoff Thompson, who lobbied all his fellow committee members on Liverpool's behalf in the build-up to today's telephone conference, welcomed the announcement.

He told the Press Association: 'I am very pleased that my colleagues on the UEFA executive committee have accepted that the champions should be able to defend their trophy. Although personally I would like to have seen Liverpool go into the third qualifying round that would have had a knock-on effect on other clubs and this way no other club is disadvantaged.

'I also think it is absolutely right that UEFA have looked at the rules. They were ambiguous and they did put intolerable pressure on the national associations, particularly those from England, Spain and Italy.

'In the future there will be a level playing field and everyone will be on an equal footing.'

FA chief executive Brian Barwick today welcomed UEFA's decision to change the rules to allow Liverpool to defend their title.

'We thank the UEFA executive committee and especially its president Lennart Johansson for listening to the strength of the argument for Liverpool's entry,' he said.

'The overwhelming view across Europe was that they should be given this opportunity, and this was reflected by the UEFA executive committee's decision today.

'We always said that this was an exceptional situation which required an exceptional solution. For the very first time, one country has five teams in the Champions League and we have to be delighted at that.

'We believed there were very strong sporting reasons for Liverpool to defend their title, not least after that fantastic final in Istanbul. That view has prevailed, and rightly so.'

Sports minister Richard Caborn said: 'I'm delighted that UEFA have decided to allow Liverpool to defend their trophy. Having made one of the greatest comebacks in European footballing history, it would have been wrong if they had not able been able to do so.

'This is a triumph for common sense and the spirit of sport. I look forward to the start of the new season and the British clubs making a powerful impact again.'

Phil Neal, who played in each of Liverpool's first four European Cup triumphs, was jubilant at the confirmation from UEFA.

He told Sky Sports News: 'We're delighted that the cup holders - as we are - are in be in.

'We're in at the early qualifying stages, but who cares? It might curtail a pre-season tour but we're back in the Champions League and the boys, like us in 1977, would like to repeat it.

'Everyone likes the champions to defend the trophy. It's like Arsenal not defending the FA Cup, so it's only right Liverpool were allowed to do that.'

Neal's one concern regarding today's decision is that Liverpool's players could tire before the end of the season, unless Rafael Benitez considerably strengthens his squad and boosts numbers.

He added: 'They're already scheduled to come back (for pre-season training) on June 27 so it will make it a very long season, particularly if we become involved with the World Club Championship and the European Super Cup, so he's going to need a bigger squad.'

I had that idea a few years back, but its virtually impossible unless you have some huge dish in your backyard.

Those channels come mostly from Hotbird, 13 degrees east

Its way too far to grab a signal with a regular 18 inch dish (its practically at the other end of the globe for us !!)
