I've been following the Gold Cup (or the Copa Oro, as it's called on the TV network I watch ) for a while now -- I wasn't going to miss this classico.

I saw the Houston Chronicle call Mexico-USA the greatest North American rivalry in all sports today. I would have to agree.

After further review, Soldier Field is 99% Mexican.

The other 1% is a horrendous stench of tequilla and taco sauce.

Definitely. USA again, in the vast minority on the home pitch. Which, when you think of it, makes victory all the sweeter.

I wish we had a player such as Marquez though. Despite him being a little unclassy bitch of a player, he still has loads of quality.

Marquez is solid.

I love beating Mexico. Such satisfaction.

Today's Gold Cup Final has to be one of the most worthy, most exciting cup finals I've ever seen. Both teams had the opportunity to put the other away at multiple points and just couldn't do it. And multiple chances to tie it up again where only one succeeded. Action at both ends. Some psycho goal keeping. Some really physical play from rather evenly-matched clubs that hate each other with a passion. A referee who was hands-off and allowed the teams to play, even get a little rough at times, without stopping it (I thought he did an excellent job, btw).

Sure, the quality level of play could have been better in finishing chances, etc. But damn... this was a fun match to watch. Edge of your seat stuff. Even sweeter was the final score.

And yes, I watched it all on Univision. What's great about people who think anyone who speaks Spanish must be Mexican is that they miss out on the many Central American subtleties... Univision was packed with pro-USA hispanics rubbing it in Mexico's faces too. Nothing like an El Salvadoran, Puerto Rican, or Nicaraguan who just wants to stick it to the Mexicans.

To celebrate the win today I made myself one of their finest creations... a chicken quesadilla... for dinner. It was rather tasty, but perhaps not as good as those you'd find at various restaurants along the border. But at least I know I'm eating something that wasn't touched by greasy fingers Sanchez who dove across the border the other day.

Yeah that's one thing I didn't understand. The first half was all Mexico and it seemed like they took the foot off the peddle in the second half.

In this kind of a rivalry with some physical history, he took a little bit of a gamble in not calling many fouls and ignoring the cloying pleas for cards, etc. He was all business, Mr. "Play On!". Both Mexico and USA got that treatment, and it made it a far more dynamic match. While physical, the match never got out of hand, and the end-to-end continuous play was such a breathtaking rarity for a final -- I am so used to the fall-whine-whistle combo. It was particularly hard on the replay booth, as they sometimes had to wait 5-10 minutes to show replay video of some manic action around the goal.

Marquez goes to the ground holding his head. Batres basically tells him, "Get up, you pansy." Team USA defense is looking for a whistle in their box while there's a lot of chaos and hacking -- looking for an out. Batres is like, "Do you hear a whistle? I sure don't... I don't give out charity, so get back to work."
