I've been following the Gold Cup (or the Copa Oro, as it's called on the TV network I watch :D) for a while now -- I wasn't going to miss this classico.

I saw the Houston Chronicle call Mexico-USA the greatest North American rivalry in all sports today. I would have to agree.

After further review, Soldier Field is 99% Mexican.

The other 1% is a horrendous stench of tequilla and taco sauce.
Definitely. USA again, in the vast minority on the home pitch. Which, when you think of it, makes victory all the sweeter.

I wish we had a player such as Marquez though. Despite him being a little unclassy bitch of a player, he still has loads of quality.
Marquez is solid.

I love beating Mexico. Such satisfaction.
Today's Gold Cup Final has to be one of the most worthy, most exciting cup finals I've ever seen. Both teams had the opportunity to put the other away at multiple points and just couldn't do it. And multiple chances to tie it up again where only one succeeded. Action at both ends. Some psycho goal keeping. Some really physical play from rather evenly-matched clubs that hate each other with a passion. A referee who was hands-off and allowed the teams to play, even get a little rough at times, without stopping it (I thought he did an excellent job, btw).

Sure, the quality level of play could have been better in finishing chances, etc. But damn... this was a fun match to watch. Edge of your seat stuff. Even sweeter was the final score.

And yes, I watched it all on Univision. What's great about people who think anyone who speaks Spanish must be Mexican is that they miss out on the many Central American subtleties... Univision was packed with pro-USA hispanics rubbing it in Mexico's faces too. Nothing like an El Salvadoran, Puerto Rican, or Nicaraguan who just wants to stick it to the Mexicans. :D

Looking at the players we have now, I'm hoping for something such as this in 2010 or 2014.

Howard

Spector - Onyewu - Bocanegra - Bornstein

Lee Nguyen - Feilhaber - Bradley - Mapp

Dempsey

Gaven

That midfield will be fucking sick in a few years time. All those players have loads of talent.

I certainly agree, probably the best match between the two since World Cup 2002. There is absolutely no doubt that this match is the greatest rivalry in North America, but real football haters will come in and say that Yankees - Red Sox is bigger. But only imbeciles will consider two baseball clubs over entire countries as big as these two.

But thank goodness for Mexico as without them we wouldn't have such a football match to look forward to. These sort of rivalries feed off of each other and draw interest, which is always a good thing. So thanks, Mexico, but we still own you. Literally.

Hey, never disrespect a nation that knows how to cook! :eyebrows:

Yum, yum, yum, yum

Anyway, very impressive of you lot to turn the game on Mexico. They're a very decent side.

That's basically the unsaid of the Chronicle's statement...to put it in perspective. There's certainly a ton more history there, but they just can't match the bile and hatred of a USA-Mexico match these days. :agree:

Baseball rivalries are for pansies anyway. :D

Serious ownage. And maybe Mexico broke their 8-year-old scoreless streak on American soil today. But what better way to rub it in than to see the heroes of Mexico's national sport taken down by players of a nation who are mostly oblivious: "There was a soccer game today? Isn't that guy who married that Spice Girl supposed to play?"

Michael Jordan is faaaaaar more popular than David Beckham is in the world.
No freaking way

Beckham has the extra factor due to the fact he's married to victoria, and not to mention anyone who has watched the last 2 world cups and is not even a fan would know who Beckham is.

Their food is indeed yummy.

To celebrate the win today I made myself one of their finest creations... a chicken quesadilla... for dinner. It was rather tasty, but perhaps not as good as those you'd find at various restaurants along the border. But at least I know I'm eating something that wasn't touched by greasy fingers Sanchez who dove across the border the other day.

Biggest pansy sport... ever. To quote Petey Dunham from Green Street Hooligans:

Matt: What are you talking about, baseball’s a girl’s game? The Red Sox have a guy that pitches the ball at over 90 mph.

Pete: Who cares? All that means is that he can have a wank faster than you. Think about it.

No freaking way

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well.

 Is he related to Martins or somethin'?
Well, when I played against...

:D

it was a very entertaining game, with not only the Mexican players hating team USA, but the fans as well  ...where the hell was this game, Acapulco ?? Puerto Viarta ?? Culiacan ??? Oh, thats right, it was in Mexico City :(

If Immigration/Customs/Border Patrol was serious about ridding our country of illegal criminals, then they should have taken a first step forward with it by waiting outside the stadium after the game with as many paddy-wagons and buses they could get their hands on...they would have had at least 30,000 "customers "

But to be fair, there are a lot of Latinos who were pulling for USA over Mexico as I said. Some of it because they have adopted this country as their homeland, others because of rivalries between Mexico and many other Central American countries.

And it's not like you, Vinman, have never been accused of rooting for another national team at the expense of the one of your citizenship. :faq1:

I'd love to witness that and be there heckling Marquez when he's also shoved in the paddy-wagon. :lol2:

I'd like to repeat -- Carlos Batres of Guatemala officiated a great match today.
Indeed. In fact, I don't remember him at all during the match. That's the way it should be.

mexico falls in the trap of playing a physical game against an american team that is faster stronger and overall younger. It was obvious that they were most threatening on the left flank yet they persisted to go right.
Yeah that's one thing I didn't understand. The first half was all Mexico and it seemed like they took the foot off the peddle in the second half.

Ahh, and the plot thickens. ;)

But at least Vinni doesn't attend matches here and taunts our own players in our own stadiums. He just reserves that for the forum. :p

In this kind of a rivalry with some physical history, he took a little bit of a gamble in not calling many fouls and ignoring the cloying pleas for cards, etc. He was all business, Mr. "Play On!". Both Mexico and USA got that treatment, and it made it a far more dynamic match. While physical, the match never got out of hand, and the end-to-end continuous play was such a breathtaking rarity for a final -- I am so used to the fall-whine-whistle combo. It was particularly hard on the replay booth, as they sometimes had to wait 5-10 minutes to show replay video of some manic action around the goal.

Marquez goes to the ground holding his head. Batres basically tells him, "Get up, you pansy." Team USA defense is looking for a whistle in their box while there's a lot of chaos and hacking -- looking for an out. Batres is like, "Do you hear a whistle? I sure don't... I don't give out charity, so get back to work."

very true...very true

I would accuse Greg of supporting another national team as well, but there's really not much to cheer about with a bunch of losers from Portugal :p
