It's clearly not Liverpool's or Milan's fault. But that two third place teams in their respective domestic leagues made up the European final indicates a systemic problem of the tournament's structure. Sure, people like to root for the underdog. But I would argue that either the net is cast too wide, the two-match elimination structure is too prone to chance, or a combination of the two.
