Actually, we sucked ass in the 80s too. Well up to 88. When it comes down to it, we had two good spells: the 70s and the late 80s through the early 90s. It's why I don't consider Holland to be a great footballing nation. We didn't even exist as proper football nation before Cruyff.

And I'm not sure we deserve respect seeing as we usually don't win because we somehow self-destruct

I respected the Cruyff-Neskens era and the Basten-Gulliet-Rijkard eras a lot....and to some extent WC 94 team, maybe they weren't great, but the match against Brazil is such a classic...
