Are you still in PrtuGAL, Gregger?
Yessir, broseppi. This is actually my first time in Lisbon. Some people told me that it's a bit like San Francisco with the hills, their Golden Gate Bridge, the trolleys, etc. To a minor extent, maybe, but I don't see much of a connection at all.
It's a pretty wacky place -- seriously steep and regular hills all over the place (I am getting a daily stairmaster workout just getting around here). And there are some of the nasty character elements: lots of graffiti (mostly political and anti-religious graffiti ... and I think Napoli is about the only place I've seen that could top this place), many of the neighborhoods and buildings where I am are decaying, etc. (roofs encased with dead weed-growth plant life, crumbling brick, peeled paint, and even a collapsed roof here and there in the old Anjos District where I am in [ironically home to many embassies], etc.). But it has a lot of character too -- and a serious nightlife (at least in the Bairro Alto and down on the docks), a great supply of grand public squares, a cool old Moorish town in the Alfama, etc.
It reminds me a lot more of a larger old colonial South American city, like parts of Buenos Aires or a more interesting/much smaller/far less dangerous São Paulo, far more than San Francisco.
