That's certainly one way of looking at it. I will do my best to be as little biased as possible, given my avatar of the past month...
Rooney got his just desserts, claim or no claim about relativistic arguments about how this WC has been officiated. And yet it's pretty clear in some circles that Ronaldo is being pointed out for poor sportsmanship while Rooney's cleats-to-the-nuts antics are being overlooked in all of this.
That said, Ronaldo gives a lot of reasons for people to hate him. He's young and talented and acts like he knows it to a degree above and beyond his actual abilities. He's got an ego problem. (Of course, we have had this problem for the past two years within our own club, btw.) He runs emotionally hot and cold like a manic depressive. Recently he seems to make a lot of nervous face twiches (pursing lips and weird crap like that), which I think the people who already hate him read more into his empty head than what's really there.
I didn't see anything wrong with pleading his case to the ref in Rooney's dismissal. If this was a Juve-Arsenal clash and it was Vieira pleading to the ref about some foul that Henry pulled, nobody would be giving him crap about it -- let alone give him crap about doing it against his France NT teammate. But as he was walking towards the touchline, he gave a wink. For England fans, that was a no class move as if he was out to eject Rooney -- and that argument has merit. But for Portugal fans, that wink was read more as a mutual appreciation with his teammates that justice was served by the ref.

Public prosecutor Palazzi has stated his claims in the Italian fraude trial. He will fight to have Juve relegated to Serie C, where they will start the season with a 6 point deduction. The Bianconeri would also lose their last 2 titles. AC Milan, Lazio Roma and Fiorentina would be relegated to Serie B, with a point deduction of 3, 15 and 15 respectively.
Luciano Moggi (Juventus), Antonio Giraudo (Juventus), Claudio Lotito (Lazio), Franco Carraro (Italian FA) and Massimo de Santis (Refereeing Association) are facing five years in jail. Adriano Galliani (Milan) two years.
