Their performances in the group stage were rubbish, their performance against Holland was rubbish while the game was destroyed by the referee, and today they were garbage while England was the better side. I doubt it, it's part of their footballing culture. Not that I think it's a lower form, or inferior, or disgusting. It's just as much part of the game as the Italian defensive tactics (barely "Italian" anymore nowadays) or whatever else you can think of. They shouldn't change either: this is who they are, how they play. Let's maintain some diversity, because the moment countries start to abandon their traditional footballing ways, it all goes to hell and becomes boring: ie Brazil and Holland.

Maybe England was trying to learn a few things from Portugal afterall... :eyebrows:

I disagree. The game against Holland was a disaster and they were lucky to go through. Today they werent even that good and went through because of penalities. Just like Argentina yesterday, who in my opinion, should have advanced because they were the better team. But I guess football isnt always fair

Thanks, Fabi. This just reminds me a lot of when teams like FC Porto can manage to get through deep in the CL, and earn it, and people piss on them because of their pedigree.

This team definitely has luck on its side this year, but calling them absolute crap and a joke in the group stages is blubberingly asinine. As if England or the Netherlands belongs there anymore than they do?

And sure they had the home pitch advantage in Euro 2004 (and blew it against Greece :doh: ), but what of these teams has actually consistently achieved in either competition?? Germany and Italy couldn't even make it out of the group stage. France won their group with a little luck, but they were shaky.

Footie isn't fair. And upsets happen. And damn good for that, really. Because too many people whine about how the CL or the WC is a joke if the usual favorites aren't in the final stages. It's as if they're guilty of the retrograde thinking that Italy=catenaccio and Holland=Total Football and can never grow out of that.

As a parallel I made here with Martin once years ago, while some tennis fans think a competition is bogus if Pete Sampras doesn't make the final rounds, they're totally overlooking the fact that Roger Federer is the new gun in town.

I expected Portugal to lose to England. And I expect them to lose to France (I thought they were crap in the group stages but they've really turned it on, despite Domenech, in the elim rounds). But Portugal is achieving historical things for their NT atm... How many victims before someone gives a team credit that they might not be total pushovers? According to some previous posts, the Netherlands and England were both supposed to tear them new assholes.

Insulting?

Two people have said my country should not be allowed in this tournament, but you don't see me saying "ohhh it's insulting." Far more people have said they hope so and so country murders the other on this forum, including my own, however you don't see me saying "ohhh it's insulting."

Did I make nationalistic remark against Portugal? No, it's a fine country. Did I post any insult regarding the players of Portugal? No, however I did say Rooney acts like a cunt, which he does. Did I say Portugal played like absolute crap and I wish that France would tear them a new asshole? Yes I did, but to be honest, in complete honesty, I can wish what I want. I'm sorry your feelings are hurt, however Portugal does not deserve to be where they are. End of story.

And I see people saying Portugal lacks calibre. Well I'll be damned, a team that has the likes of Figo, Deco, Ronaldo, Costinha, Maniche, Carvalho, and Miguel sure lack calibre. Sheesh, I mean they're worse than friggin Angola, arent they.

Sure it is fair, it is about who is better at one millisecond in time, and on that day, it was Lehmann, today, England were too tired, and were assclown jokes, just as they are in every world cup.

It has nothing to do with how good the TEAM is, it has everything to do with individual performances in one spot in time.

Although I would argue a different side if we were talking about the France game, because un that match, France were the better team, but the indiviuals could not get it done.

I partly agree: some would argue the Netherlands never deserved to even move past the group stage, but they did. When it comes down to it, there is no deserve in football. At which point I like to think: if you're there, you must have done all the right things to get there, so you deserve it. Portugal deserve being where they are just as much as the other teams: everyone in the semi-finals did what they had to do to get there.

That doesn't mean I like them, but that's a subjective and irrelevant issue.

As for retrograde thinking: I believe there is too little of it. The world of football, like the rest of the world, is globalising and becoming one boring melting pot. Perhaps it's just me, but I wish the Italians would stick to their (in-)famous catenaccio and the Dutch to their total football. The world would be a more exciting place for it.
