Honest question here, Nick. I've noticed what, from my perspective, seems like a tendency for Italians to label players by their international identities far more than footie followers in other countries. The foreign flags in the stands of clubs for one, representing the nationalities of the fans' favorite club players. But also things like Italian calcio announcers frequently calling players by their nationality -- e.g., I often hear "il ucranio" uttered more than I would hear "Sheva" (length of name aside, this is very true with other examples as well).

Yes I would agree...but I don't think it implies anything or says somethign about Italians i.e. being un accepting, etc.
The Curva adored Sheva and had like 5 - 10 chants for him (only Baresi and Maldini have more) and three times as many permanent banners everything from "King of the East" to "TZAR"...one of the chants mentions how he is not Brazilian but scores nonetheless..something like that.
A common site in Curva's is a flag from the star player's nation such as Brazil and Ukraine for Milan (for the longest time Holland)...however, players are accepted as their own and expected to speak the language. (italian)
