@ Libero - you will feel much beter about things if you go to the nearest ristorante Italiana in Brussels and order some Pasta con Fagioli, and then punch the waiter in the face if he mispronounces the regional dish of Campania.

Sorry for using some of the native tongue, but since I am a Communist, I'll use any language I want and . . . ban your fooking religion while I'm at it.

Speaking of languages, Erik, quit trying to fix English. You don't see me messing with that Afrikaans you speak, do you?

    Nick,

Just when I expected you to come down on me a la Vinnie Gattuso you produce an insightful post. I guess my provocation triggered a similar reaction in you as it did in me when I saw you defend Berlusca so unconditionally on X-tra time and could not refrain from jumping in.
Perhaps, oddly enough that post did come to mind ... it also opened up a proverbial can of worms ... being an Italian American living in Italy has been quite a learning experience and everyone from the barista at my local bar to the bank teller to the tifoso in the "Curva" have reminded me in not so many words that since my Parents decided to sail across the Atlantic 40 years I will never be 'uno di noi' despite bearing an Italian passport and being much more informed on subjects such as Italian history, football and .. espresso. So yes, the trigger was instant in this case..

Yes, I wondered why a siciliano "doc" would constantly misspell one of Sicily's most popular pastries (and imo overshadowing many other delicacies coming from that land on the international scene). That the term cannoli is contracted into canoli abroad comes as a surprise to me. I'll take your word on it and I suppose I look like a tit now.
    Libero,

Let's not play these games .. it can be very insulting. You didn't wonder why a Siciliano would spell Cannoli with one N ... you laughed at it and threw it in my face in a subtle way to make a point.

You don't have to take my word on it....every one from the New York times to Cooks.com have used one N in the spelling of CANNOLI ... like I said, living in the NEW WORLD for over 25 years will eventually do some things such as this.

Obviously I haven't endured discrimination on the level you are describing it, but you forget that, though I wasn't exactly dropped off the boat at Ellis Island, I too am an emigrant, and as such would be more sensitive to that subject than others. I received prejudicial treatment when I lived in Switzerland, and had to deal with one of the most hermetic societies I have come accross so far. For some Swiss, an Italian in their country is at best dishonest and at worst an opportunistic "frontalier", i.e. one of those guys crossing the border to do the jobs no one wants to do anymore, and then having the guts to spend the money back home.

I experienced it when I made my internship at the European Commission here in Brussels, noting how an Italian opening his mouth at the Parliamant resulted into the Germans and Brits laughing up their sleeve. It may sound trivial, and frankly the current Italian political class deserves little more given its utter cafoneria - to use a word you are so fond of - but for me to see the representatives of a country as politically aware as Italy not being given the benefit of the doubt hurts me. But apart from the usual clichés anyone can nurture towards any race, I don't indeed experience it on a daily basis where I am now, also because, unlike what a man of the world now turned mod (bwah!) has been claiming repeatedly, the Belgian doesn't think he's better than you. Quite the contrary in fact. Which brings me to wonder if this isn't actually a phenomenon typical of America or at least the Anglo-saxon world, triggered by some instinctive waspish attitude claiming supremacy over the great unwashed. I mean, the stories you're speaking of have been unheard of in Europe for at least a generation. I haven't experienced them myself in the year I spent in America, but again it was a different context altogether (oh yeah I actually did as a "white pig" in a black neighborhood, but this story is for another day). In a perfect world, one shouldn't even have to defend his roots in the first place, but oh well. What I still don't get though is why, if you're so preoccupied with preserving the image of Italian Americans, why you would claim to have ties with the local Zio Binnu..
No you have not experienced them and the occassional drunkard asking "Paesano..avez vous du VINO?" in the streets of Brussels or the Italian politicians at the EU not being given the time of the day doesn't really compare to Supreme Court LEGEND Antonin Scalia being compared to "Tony Soprano" for a hand gesture OR New York Mets Pitcher John Franco being accused of having Mob Ties or Nicola Rocco, Sergio Lenza, Robert Padovano or Vince being labeled WOP, Greaseball or Mobster in grade and high school...I'm sure the Belgians were not NICE but with all due respect the Belgians do not think of Italians as 3 generations of farmers who are the quintessential definition of 'nouveau riche'.

When you were in America you were harmless..you were the foreign exchange student with the cool accent from the land of PIZZA...when we went to school we were the WOPS whose mothers stayed home and baked and Fathers worked on the PIC and SHOVEL and stashed CASH in his bed....When we applied for interships at Banks, Law Firms, etc. our last name triggered instant questions like "Do you watch the Sopranos?" "Does your Father make wine in his basement?" "Does your Mother cultivate her own tomatoes"...but if you asked the African American "Does your Father drink one litre colt .45's" or the Hebrew "Does your father save every penny" it would be uncalled for...

As for the last sentence in your post ... my Grandmother used to say "we might as well laugh about it otherwise we can only cry"...at some point you just start laughing with them

I can only disagree with your generalisation about Northern Italians considering expats as "terroni bis". Well, chances are that some of those who have just given Berlusca a majority in all Northern regions think so now, given that the massive pro-Prodi vote of the Italians abroad proved to be the decisive factor in the Left's puny victory at the Senate.
Oh ok I get it this has turned into a Berlusca thing like every thing that goes sour in Italy ... ok I'm game..

"There are three types of Lies: Lies, Damn LIes and Statistics"

    Benjamin Disraeli

The US actually had an incredibly high vote in favour of Forza Italia, so much so that they captured a seat in the house for an individual from Sicily. In fact, most Forza Italia candidates where from the South and the only reason Forza Italia did not capture the Senate and other House seat in the America voting was because of parties like Tremaglia and Casini splitting the vote...had Forza italia followed Unione's theory and ran ONE candidate under only UNIONE they would have swept all the seats...problem is that too many expats saw this as a good opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream: get paid for doing nothing and go to Itay every month.

    Kaiser Franco said:
Funny how many Forza Italia yesmen have been bitching about that in the past weeks, seemingly implying that those votes should count for less (the forzisti making a distinction between serie A and serie B Italians? Well I never..). And funny how Sua Emittenza shot himself in the foot, as it was his own government that passed a law allowing this a few years back, no doubt hoping to grab a few more votes. But I digress.
Here is another interesting fact that has not made its way over the Atlantic...
Mr. X and Mr. Y have both been elected for the Senate and House respectively. Both are from the UNIONE party. Both spent an estimated one million dollars on their campaign when the limit was 60,000$...wait a minute wasn't it that evil Cruise ship crooner turned Billionaire that uses his means to get what he wants?? Isn't that evil billionaire that bends the rules to get himself into office?? Here is more to put in one's pipe and smoke: The Unione members have are also under investigation for voter fraud..it seems some of these individuals showed up at the Consulate and Embassy offices with boxes of sealed envelopes claiming the voters didn't want to send the ballots in by mail but mysteriously fell into the hands of the Unione members: the Carabinieri made its way to places such as British Columbia, Chicago and Ontario for an investigation....still waiting for RAI to report on this ....

Both Those damn toscanacci will poke fun at anyone, since allegedly they speak Dante's Italian, and while they will see you as a Southern prole they will consider me as a Northern barbarian (Tuscany hardly qualifies as "the North"..). Generally all in good fun though. One thing you will not be able to suspect this pompous Northerner of though, is of being anti-South. Not just because I come from the heartland of Lega Nord and had to witness this small poujadist/qualunquista/man-in-the-streetist movement grow into the second biggest "centre"-right party in the North. And not only for the fact that I like to spend my holidays in Sardegna, Puglia, Calabria and your own Sicily. But because as a Northener I feel guilty that we owe quite a bit of our priviledged situation to the historical plundering of the South, only to leave them to their own fate when we did not need them anymore and then trying to repair some of the damage through feel-good "casse del Mezzogiorno" and the likes. Because I fully sympathize with those Southern immigrants to the North who get called "marocchini" and are asked when the Vesuvius will wash their dirt off with fire. Because I shit on the tribalistic gung-ho culture of self-proclaimed and self-deluded "padani" and wish I could have a bit of Southern spensieratezza inside me, because I like to side with the underdog and because of a thousand other reasons. Are there some Southern traits I dont like ? Hell yes, just as there are some Northern ones I can't stand. Enough PC bollocks (no Vinman, it doesn't stand for Partito Comunista) : the North and the South differ on many things. They're practically different people and countries. But I for one think that's the beauty of it. This is why, as much as I feel sorry that you had to confront said discrimination while growing up, and while I admit I hadn't taken it into account due to my own ignorance on the subject (or at least on the extent of it) I don't think I owe you an apology. I am not the one who did that to you and never would.
Never said you were ... but it seems like I am guilty of the same 'crime' as you are: generalizing...every Northerner sh*ts on the very soul of the expat and Southerner whereas you assumed that every Italo American was responsible for gloryfying the Mafia as you once stated and that an Italian American is the furthest thing from an Italian but if that makes them happy why not...
I am willing to bet I have had to defend Italy and its culture to more people than the average Italian who actually highlights everything that is wrong with Italy and usually blames it on Berlusconi from the EURO to the Price of cell phones to the success of Juve and Milan.
Like I said, its hard for someone to hear they are the furthest thing from Italian because they called it TIRAMESU rather than TIRAMISU or SALAME rather than SALAMI especially when they live in constant reminder that they if they are rich and successful they are mobsters ..

I was only reacting within the context of this forum, so you are barking at the wrong tree.

So to sum it up, I wasn't nitpicking on anyone for typing in Italian. Actually I'd rather encourage it, and I even helped you with a legal text you did not understand once. But when ppl mock this poor guy for his Italian and whatever other futile reason, I think it's only fair to give them a taste of their own medicine. If "il mio bello Italia" must be considered as comedy material, it's only fair that "I am insane more or less Juve" should be too. Regardless, while I am not aware of all the episodes of the Gino saga, what I can gather from it is this : he once said, in the midst of a conversation, that "if I want to smoke weed and my dad says no I'll punch him in the face". And people are throwing this into his face again and again and again. I've seen Virgin slag the crap out of Gino on X-tra time and somehow justifying the filthiness just because the latter had said that line at some point in the past. Vile, hypocritical and above all ignorant. Ad nauseam rubbing in is such a recurrent tactics on these boards : you used it yourself against Zlatan as regards his "leaving backs". With one glaring difference tho : Zlatan is more than capable to defend himself, while Gino is not (I honestly feel sorry for him). Did it occur to the the anti-Gino brigade that perhaps he just meant "I like to get wasted so much that not even my dad can prevent me from doing it" in a joking way? Do they realize that his English is quite limited, that he can only use the words he knows and as such he is bound to find himself entangled into quid pro quos? How about coming out of their narrow-minded vision of the world for one second, and acknowledge Gino's efforts to communicate in THEIR language and give him a helping hand instead of pushing him further into the abyss? Too high an expectation I am afraid.
When one opens his mouth day after day in here and posts without filtering it through is brain he should expect that once he makes yet another ridiculous statement i.e. I AM SOO ITALIAN that I LOVE IT it will open up the floodgates for bashing and ridicule...
Case in point: You will never hear me bashing a Gobbo for going to San Siro and partaking in stunts like balloon tossing or name calling ..

I've actually seen something of the sort happen in good ole Napule when somebody from the North started showing off his ignorance concerning "Vesuvius' jewel".

Ahh, and there's the rub. All of us Communists assume that we are entitled to be among the ruling oligarchs. We simply feel entitled to be the oppressors, never considering that we might actually end up as the oppressed. If we stopped for a minute and considered that we might be under the steel heel, then we probably would all turn into center-left democrotites.

@ Nick - Very good posts. I'm still not interested in going Brokeback with you, but I'm still waiting for your post World Cup schedule so we can get together (in a drink some beer, wine, Campari, and smoke cigars kind of way).

@ Andy - Though I was for Edmonton, I pass along my condolences for your Red Wings. They are really making a habit of early round exits. So much for the original six finale you dreamed of. Rangers gone, Red Wings gone, Canadiens . . . GONE!!!

Allright, who wants to talk a little NFL draft??

    Anyone??

I LOVE what the 49ers did in this draft. Getting two potential star players in Vernon Davis and Manny Lawson (despite he being from the very OVERRATED N.C. State. Seriously, how can a team with 3 Defensive Linemen drafted in the first round only have 7 wins last year?? anyway......)

Care to discuss your teams drafts, what you thought they did well, and what they didn't do so particularly well.

    Let's See.....

Robert likes Green bay. I like the pick of A.J. Hawk. Honestly, I thought they were going to go for Vernon Davis, but I'm glad they didn't. They finally got some offensive line help in the 3rd round. The WR in the 2nd (Jennings) could turn out to be a really good ball player. Abdul Hodge in the 3rd, assuming he can overcome his character issues, is a steal.

    Andy. Detroit.

Ernie Sims with the 9th pick, when they could have traded down at least a few spots to get him. Well..............at least he could be a good player.

Bullocks in the 2nd and Calhoun in the 3rd were good picks
