Andy, my friend is having his first football game as a coach today and he asked me to watch the game with him to help him improve the forward line. He will be playing a 4-4-2, I know you hate it but that's the simplest tactics and it is best for starters.

Now he has 4 forwards, one of them is a hard-worker but lacks technique very much. The other three are highly technical but he is not sure about their team-work ability. He says that they wait for the ball and do stuff on their own when they receive it.

So my task today is to watch and come up with suggestions, how do you think you can tactically engage such players in team play without telling them to engage in team-work activities? I mean there must be a way to make them involved in the game even with their play nature.

Well to start, if he's going to play the straight 4-4-2, those two strikers will want to play off of each other as much as possible, meaning that they'll want to stay close to one another. If he can get them to do that, perhaps the two technical players will start working with one another. But if they just get the ball down and start running at defenders then that won't work.

I guess the only way to get them to work with one another without forcing them is to make sure they play close together and hope that they'll use one another when they have to. If that doesn't work then you've got to put in the hard worker and just have him disrupt the defense for the better player to work his magic, if he has any.

The first half was a disaster. He played those two up front who did some work for 15 minutes then the whole team collapsed and stopped working. The opponents took a 2-0 lead and in the end of the first half, a moment of brilliance from one of the forwards cut the lead to 2-1.

The second half he put in a defensive midfielder and moved one of the forwards back (sort of like Nedved) and included the other hard worker up front). The team became much better with lots of movement and they managed to equalize and miss a lot of chances. 5 minutes to the end the other team got a corner and they scored from it. The match ended 3-2 but now he has an idea that his second half lineup was much better and he will work on it.
