Nothing like a good MLS contract to firmly conclude a player is 'DONE'. Whereas I thought Beckham may still have a good season left in him I am certain he is finished....he refuses to sign for non CL contenders only to sign in the MLS. Competitive? Of course, it will be a blast for him to play with players making 30k a year on his own team. Nothing like teamwork there.
Just like the NY Cosmos and WC 94 it will cause real football fans to cringe watching the bandwagoners wearing the Beckham jerseys and after a few months it will fizzle. Beckham will probably end doing infomercials by 2009.

Rumor is that Ronaldo and Del Piero will be the next big names to join MLS.

I never read anything about this. Juventus do have a project in mind for next year, and Del Piero is in this project. So I doubt anymove to MLS.

MLS image is gathering momentum in Holland. A former PSV keeper (Waterreus) has just moved to NYC and more players are considering playing in the States for a season or two. But of course that's Holland, and we're Atlanticists. Might not be the same in Germany and beyond

It might, but I'm not sure it will at all. Europeans are very self-centered when it comes to football. IF they show interest in a foreign league besides the CL and UEFAcup where their own teams participate in, it's usually a neighbouring European league.
You could be right, however we do know Beckham has quite pull over his blinded beloved fans, particulary in Asia. I'm sure at least some people in England will continue to follow the career of their former captain... at least to some degree, sort of like the situation with Waterreus and other Dutch players. But the real pull for cash will come from those crazed Asian fans who want to do a little pulling of Becks themselves..

That's a rather pessimistic view, Nick. This situation is not exactly like that of the Cosmos and USL back in the 80s, as the MLS has a very solid base of American players filling the ranks at every respective club... unlike the Cosmos whose only hype came from the likes of Pele. Moreover, there is obviously much more funding for the MLS than meets the eye, and that is basis for the capture of Beckham. Major League Soccer can survive without the likes of Beckham and Pele, however the old USL could not. We must make that distinction here before throwing out more conjectures.

Personally, I consider myself a real football fan and I'm not cringing when it comes to this situation, even in spite of my hate for Beckham. And in actuality, if Beckham truly wants to be a catalyst for soccer in the United States, I'm going to support him because this country needs to open its eyes to this sport.

Like I said before, the signing of Beckham for the MLS will undoubtedly garner more money for said league and create more interest for it around the world. I'm not sure how much persuasiveness Beckham has because personally I laughed at everything that came out of the man's mouth, however if he has some friends at high places, which I'm sure he does... that could further the situation of the MLS itself. But what we do know is that, at least in the short run, this situation will bring the MLS loads of cash, and that is never a bad thing. The question is what sort of impact this will have on potential new fans, and only time will tell us.

I just saw Al Gore on Oprah (you guys probably saw this a whole while back) and he was so damn paternalistic.

Gore: "It's the CO2 that's causing the global warming"
Oprah: "So we need to do something about the CO2?"
Gore: "Yes, because it's causing global warming."
Oprah: "So CO2 is the cause of all this?"
Gore: "Yes, that's why we need to cut down on it."

And it went on like that for a while. After an intense discussion that lasted for about half an hour they concluded something needed to be done about the C02. Well that's just great, but how the fuck do you expect such an idiotic show to help anyway? As an American I would be downright insulted, I'm not a five year old.
you watch Oprah??? you are disapointing me..

That is awfully short-sighted of you.

    EXTREMELY short sighted of you.

Is Beckham "done" as far as being a regular first teamer on a premier club in Europe?? Yes, he is.

Has he lost a step?? Yes, he has.

Is he a player, like Mattheus, Valderrama, et al... who came here when they were in their late 30's for the sole purpose of looking to cash in on one last payday?? Absolutely not.

It took MLS a while to figure this out, but they finally realized that the ill-fated formula of young, home grown talent, and rapidly aging stars wasn't working, both on the field and in the stands.

The casual fans knew very little of these old players, and the hard core fans knew that the product they were seeing out of said players was merely a shell of what they used to be. And that is the big, BIG difference here. Mattheus, and to a degree, Valderama, were basically useless when they were here. Beckham can still be a game changer and a viable presence in THIS LEAGUE, which admitedly, is not nearly on par with other leagues around the world.

Beckham, at the age of 31, can, and will be a very effective player for the Galaxy, give the MLS world wide recognition, and be a flashpoint for players at similar stages of their careers to come and play football here.

Bottom line, there is very little downside to all of this. Beckham is going to make a ton of money here, his popularity will now be influenced by American audiences. The MLS, if you bothered checking up on this, have a very, very minimal financial risk (400,000.00 a year on his contract, the rest being paid for thru endorsements, part ownership in the Galaxy, and by the owners of the Galaxy, AEG Inc.)

What else were they supposed to do Nick???

Your post reeked of a very pessimistic attitude towards American Soccer, almost to the point where you would like to see it fail.

    Don't be stunned.

New York and New England could very well be interested, due to the large Italian-American contingency in both areas.

I'm not sure how much money New York has, but New England is owned by Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, and is a very smart businessman who loves sports. Not only could he afford Del Piero, but he could afford to buy Juventus if he were so inclined.
