So what's the point of making that statement at all? You say you don't care what people think about you on a forum, so why would you try to influence their opinion about it? It doesn't make sense to me.
Yeah, that sounds like what I would have said. But the crucial thing here is that you have the ability to act any way you want. Burke was acting that way, but he didn't have to, which shows very clearly now when he's not. It's a mistake to consider people "good" or "bad", it's their choice to be "good" or "bad". On a forum this is very obvious, people respond in certain ways to things they don't like, which is often out of character compared to what they've been like up to that point. And as an admin, what I did was encourage the good things and condemn the bad ones. It's exactly what you would do with a child, you try to shape its personality in a positive way. While it may sound insulting that I compare us to children, that's really what we are though. Our consciousness in the sense of making decisions about whether to be "good" or "bad" is not significantly more sophisticated than a child's. When I get carried away and say negative and mean things about people, I'm acting like a kid, I'm being no more mature than that.
I know you like to stress that this is "just a forum", but this happens in real life too. You may think you know someone, but all you really know is their "persona", their inclination to act a certain way. That doesn't mean they couldn't act different. That's why you see things like "the man who married 7 women and none of them ever knew" on Oprah, people putting on an act for others. And it's not just exotic cases like that, I'm sure you don't act the same with people you like as with people you dislike, do you? I certainly don't. So the person I like doesn't know the same me as the person I dislike. Of course, on a forum it's much easier to be a phony, you choose statements you respond to, it's asynchronous so you're under no pressure to respond immediately, you can go missing if you want, you can take one thing way out of context and repeat it a thousand times over etc.
