I was reading the Moment of Clarity Thread again and having read yet another article about muslim extremism this morning it struck me that I myself know a lot of muslims who I'd label extremists. It surprised me again to see how members such as Hambon or Zé Tahir slagged me off for doubting God's existence. I was even called an extremist myself a couple of times because I admitted to be agnostic. When I compare the muslims I know with the christians I know, I must admit that the threat of muslim terrorism just might scare even me.

That said I'm still, like most of you, not very fond of the whole war on terror though.
I am a muslim, but i dont impose my opinion on other ppl as many extremists not only muslims try to do.Also trying the wrong ways and terrorism is a prime example.

muslim terrorism scares even some of us muslims, as in Iraq most the ppl who r dying r muslims.

Most of the war on terror is a joke, so am certainly against that

Actually that statement makes sense Burke because we live in the U.S. so obviously we will care MORe about what happens in our own nation..it is also the fact it was captured on television and some of us actually knew people that died. Unfortunately, civil wars and inter race wars are very common in Africa where EUROPE decided to draw up the borders .. its sad but it is a fact of life in some African nations..
watching two commercial airlines crash into a building LIVE on television and two more try to make their way into other buildings is NOT something any nation has seen...
We lived in a rather tranquil environment for generations so its quite normal we go apesh*t over things like PLANES INTO BUILDINGS and don't go as apesh*t about a civil war/genocide happening in a nation most citizens can't even pronounce...

Just my observation but I'm an American Prick....

    and Thank God I am

What the hell are you talking about? All those posts and that's what you understood? Fucking pathetic. When the hell did I call you extremist?

You know what? There's no point in arguing with you, because you're the kind that never bothers to study up on stuff, that don't give things a chance. You're the one of those that didn't know jack about Islam. The people that say "so you're islam, right?". If you even knew an ounce about my faith you couldn't possibly utter the fact that I'm an extremist. I could actually sit here and explain everything to you, but from past experience there's absolutely no point in talking to you about this subject. So kindly refrain from labeling me and we'll stay off this topic.

Like Communism, I think it's good in concept but miserable in execution.

I will partially agree with this. And to some extent I aleady have above. Every nation naturally has self-interest at heart.

However, the degree of self-interest is what I think is different between most of America -- or at least the American media -- and good chunks of the rest of the world. America is pretty much an island in a lot of ways -- or at least it acts like it. The great majority of American citizens have never had a passport -- and never saw the need for one.

America is also too young of a country to have accumulated the lessons of colonialism and other international push/pull moments of the past. As always comes out in these conversations, we haven't had a true war on American soil since 1812, which is long beyond generational memory -- unlike much of the rest of the world. (And our last real civil war is almost as far in the past.)

As an example, I recall being in the Azores in '98 and watching RTP during the non-stop coverage of East Timor's succession from Indonesia -- and all the bloodshed that ensued. There was clearly a strong national bond and popular connection being expressed between Portugal and this tiny, new nation halfway around the world. It was rather foreign to witness as an American, as I could not imagine that level of supportive interest coming from the U.S. should, say, Hawaii break free from the U.S. and independently run into troubles with Japan.

Many nations are more global citizens because they recognize the need to be -- and that they have to be to ensure mutual peace and survival. America generally does not recognize any such need.

That has nothing to do with it, it's not your fault that everytime you turn on the tv that's all you see and hear. How do I know? Well for starters I don't listen or read to biased media, also,I can tell when they try to brainwash people about things, such as Islam. It's amazing how much they'll lie, disgusting rather.
I'm sorry....maybe I didnt ever tell you that I am a police officer, and unfortunately its usually the bad ppl I deal with, and not the good

Unfortunately, most of the Islamic ppl I've dealt with on a professional level are bad, but I have never said that their isnt any good out there- they prefer to stay to themselves

except for those on the local Yemeni soccer team...bunch of hacks !!:D (even there, 6 of their starters in 2001 are now sitting in jail, being part of the infamous "Lackawanna Six")

To Ze Tahir: "It is too bad for the wood which finds itself a violin and scorn for the heedless who argue over what they are totally ignorant of"
read the above, and let it sink in

Let's face it, Vinman. Most anybody you deal with on a "professional level" isn't exactly Nobel laureate material. We've seen the TV show "Cops". ;)

To be honest that's not an excuse. That's like saying that blacks and hispanics are bad because the ones you meet in your line of work are not good. Any minority for that matter that you'll meet in your line of work will not be any good.

I think we've done this "who has the crazier extremists, Christians or Moslems?" bit long enough. Kids stuff really.

You want a meaningful discussion on religion? OK, I'll start:

Who is more deserving of a public mauling, Baptists or Free Will Baptists?

    Please discuss.
