Dont see it as arrogance at all... Personally at this stage i see absolutely no difference between first or seccond in the group... We're at the sharp end now... everyones dangerous...

Winning the group is a slight psychological boost for the players, but little more meaningful...

The more inportant thing for chelsea at the moment is the premiership and as such not getting beaten by a premiership rival and giving them a boost to kick them on for the season... especially with the 4 matches coming in quick succession over the xmas break... No one wins them all, there are allways surprises over xmas... Its notoriously the most dangerous period in the english calender... as such you cant give another team a boost at this time
You mentioned something here that cought my attention. It is about the CL current format. Don't you think that the second stage is a very important stage and there are eight good teams being eliminated all of a sudden?

I think it can be unfair at times, these teams that have played for 3 months to qualify from their group stage, can be eliminated in two games (home and away).

I think when they had a group stage in the second stage, the competition was a better format. The groups in the second stage produce a much better football than the one produced in the current format.

Andy, do you really play with your dong for 120 minutes or was that just an ironic comparison to watching Liverpool v. Chelsea on another gut-wrenching, mind-numbing evening. Throw the bastards out and play with your dong, I say.
I concur, especially if David Beckham is not out on the pitch.

But yet again Paul...if you finish second in your group you do not have home field advantage in the second leg of the knockout phases. Now we can go into a long discussion of whether you have an advantage playing at home in the second match, however the way I see it you do have an extra edge...you know what you must do with the crowd behind you. Of course in some cases it doesn't matter though..
Still, this is not what matters. The whole second stage is insane. It is a knockout stage and it is killing lots of good teams all in one shot. I really don't like it.

Before you know you end up with Monaco-Porto as CL final.

Obviously, being at home for the second leg is ideal (not much use if you get turned over 3-0 in the 1st leg though), but imo its not that much of an advantage...

At the end of the day, if you cant beat your opponent over 2 legs, whatever the order of play... You dont deserve to go through

In that year the eight teams that got knocked out were:

Bayern - Always a good team
Celta - Fine
Sparta - Fine
Lokomotiv Moscow - Also fine
Man. United - A good team
Stuttgart - They had an amazing year and great performance in the group stage
Real Sociedad - They were a good team
Juventus - No comment

Personally jeeks, if it was upto me, the comp would be champions only and knock out start to finnish
The original format. This is also fair. The competition started like this, it is a cup and a cup it should be. But working your arse off for 3 months to qualify, just to get a weird draw with a team that might do its best just to knock you out for your name is just wrong.

Again, If you cant beat the team in front of you over 2 legs, you dont deserve it anyway...

If your a good team, you should be able to overcome whatever tactics your opposition use

Small teams put an effort in two games just to knock out big names. They don't care if they got knocked out in the round after, their purose during those two days was not to lift the cup, it was just to be called the ones that knocked out <insert big team name>

True, about if not being able to win over two legs then you don't deserve it. But let that be from the start or not be at all.

Did anybody see the situation in Bratislava tonight? How on earth did UEFA let that match play on...half the pitch was covered in mud and you couldn't even string a few passes together. If I was Porto I would be quite angry.
