'German law had required such stores to report to police significant purchases of hydrogen peroxide.'

so nothing to do with profiling
German law requires cashiers to record your passport if you buy a paysafecard >100eur (money laundering) and yet they never do it. You'll have to look like a yugoslavian illegal casino operator to trigger the control.

Her veil was essential in this case. I can go to the same store and buy 5l of that substance right now and the same lady would wish me a nice day

The whole issue is a 14 year old kid being profiled due to his name. Whether he invented the clock or bought it from a convenience store beside his house has little to do with the issue of blatant discrimination that a 14 year old was subject to from his own school and his own teacher.
I'm not saying that the kid wasn't profiled, but for a brief moment there needs to be a question of whether the kid knew that or not.

Let's not forget that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak once spent a night in jail for bringing a fake bomb he made to school. Steve definitely did not get scholarships, Presidential invitations, etc. as a result of his actions, and it doesn't make his situation justifiable simply because he didn't look brown. And he was a guy who truly was an inventor that this 14-year-old kid is today given credit for.

To be fair that was a pretty bombish looking clock.

When you're a rat and someone is laying down cheese, knowing precisely how you'd react, there's no harm in pausing to look for a potential trap nearby.

I don't give much credence to these sort of things. I'm sure if you knowledge bombed people on street corners in any society you would get similar reactions.

But the thing is, many say they disagree with the premise, but support it anyway "for Obama." This is a big problem with the Democrats and Republicans.

Yes and no. At some level your leaders have to demonstrate leadership. And leadership as a concept is worthless until you have to influence people to do things that they normally might not agree with at first. Social inertia is immense. Government inertia is even more immense.

For example, how bad does our dysfunctional health care insurance system need to get before someone risks upsetting the status quo for the chance to improve it ... even if risk of change means it might result in failure ? It's too lazy and easy to do nothing and maintain the inertia, and people get uncomfortable when there are changes to their lives -- especially to things they generally need and depend on.

That said, that doesn't mean you shouldn't engage your brain. Even so, I sign Internet petitions all the time because they are a worthless joke. The more ridiculous the petition, the better. In those cases, it's the annoying people who are clueless about how government works who issue these petitions are the ones I am humoring. A little of that could be at play here too.
