It's a segment of society that thinks their personal, unvalidated science and ideas outsmart the general scientific community. It's Steve Jobs trying to outsmart his cancer doctors by refusing surgery for a year while he ate nothing but peas.

I wasn't just talking about the religious folk. Plenty of people are crazy. The only redeeming factor I suppose is that in some parts of Europe we have had vaccines that turned out to cause horrible complications in an extremely small number of cases.

We live in an age of so much information, everyone has convenient access to some use case or news headlining where something different happened than what established science would expect. And these exceptions become sacrosanct and a foundation for dogmatic fallacy.
