Once again, are we to be nations ruled by law or ethics? I'm sorry if I'm coming off a bit annoying here but it all seems rather childish to me, plus in the Iceland example it was his wife's money which she inherited why the hell should governments have a say in that in the first place, this type of taxation should be a lot more unethical and alarming than the circumventing of it imo
I absolutely hate inheritance tax. This is tax on something that people have built up during their entire lives to pass on to their offspring. Furthermore, they were already paying taxes during their lives to build the entire thing up in the first place!

Let's say a Belgian man wants a house for his children. He works to earn enough money. 1. His earnings will be taxed. With what's left of his earnings he buys a house. 2. When he buys the house, he will need to pay what is known as a registration fee in Belgium. This amounts to no less than 10% of the price of the entire house! 3. Now he has finally bought this house and it is his own, but every year he has to pay taxes to keep it too (http://www.taxbites.be/taxation/content/view/98/45/). After all this he dies and wants to pass the house on to his children. 4. Now his children have to pay taxes for the house they inherit...

This means that one house is taxed FOUR times.

And then the public is outraged that Belgians want to escape taxes.. Fuck, for the taxes we pay, everything should be fucking free in this country. I'm proud that we have great healthcare, I'm proud that we have great education. But there are still potholes in our roads. Why the fuck does this happen? We pay billions upon billions upon billions.

Therein lies the problem of rent seeking in government. Glad we both agree on this issue. ;)

Two things, don't have the time to fully flesh thee arguments out right now:
First of all, that man and his children are still different people - and the children didn't do shit for the house.
Second of all, it is extremely necessary to keep inherited inequality at least somewhat in check.

That's not really what I said.

But yeah, you could see it that way.
That's why your roads don't get fixed.

This is like a government version of collateralized debt obligations, taxing the underlying without any real sale transactions. When is enough enough?

1. Yes and no. They're his successors. In many ways they are him. And more importantly, I understand sales tax, I understand income tax. Because something is actually created. That's not the case here. The house isn't really changing owner for example. It isn't sold. There's no added value to tax at all.
2. No. It's not. In fact many people work so their children have it better. The state has no business trying to fuck these people over. The sate's sole purpose is trying to better the lives of everyone. Does that mean you need to tax certain things? Yes, right now it does. But if you want to change inequality, you don't do it with bullshit taxes like this. You do it with basic income, universal healthcare.. Measures that benefit everyone. Because you know what the outcome of inheritance tax is? The wealthy create trusts that are not taxed in this way. The net result of inheritance tax is more inequality, not less.

In many ways I agree with that. It's sort of a running joke between me and my friends. Whenever the same road never gets fixed or some government project isn't coming along we say that somewhere someone is now rich.

You're right. Another name for it is pork. In order to push something through, Turkmenistan receives 10,000 pork bellies from some producer in Springfield. Privatized benefit -- 100%, social benefit 0. That's in all governments.

Of course they are different people and the house is changing owner - and it's not like the children don't get any inheritance at all, and there is a rather high threshold too (or at least should be imo).

Oh, but inheritancy is pretty much the most unequal source of wealth there is. The vast majority don't receive anything of note, a decent proportion of people receive less than the threshold usually is, while it's literally only the top 1% that receives the overwhelming majority of inherited wealth, the inequality here is staggering really. As with virtually everthing, the economic right simply works with images that aren't supported by reality, it's not about the humble parents working their ass off for a family home for their son or daughter.

Like:

Moreover, inheritance is an extremely important factor of perpetuating inequality, and it's only getting more important by the year. I mean I know I've already referred to Picketty a couple of times when this point comes up, but the statistical evidence is just staggering. If you've got half an hour or something, read this http://piketty.pse.ens.fr/files/PikettyZucman2014HID.pdf

Concerning the trusts, well, it's the trusts and their usage for - you guessed it - tax avoidance that are the problem, not the tax.

Approach may be lolsy or wtf, but the problem is an old age one, or more likely a more common one these days. No respect or understanding to those who brought you into this world (tho its a two-way street ofcourse, she seems like a poor parent to say the least), act like your parents are your peers or friends you can behave to in any way. First ook at it and think wtf is she doing, then you see the spoilt retarded child cursing and flipping his own mother repeatedly :sergio:
